"None of us are safe" - Justin Gatlin reacts to Tyreek Hill's controversial detention by police outside Hard Rock Stadium
Five-time Olympic medalist, Justin Gatlin, recently reacted to the news of Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill being detained just before a National Football League (NFL) match. The Dolphins hosted the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday and defeated them 20-17 at the Hard Rock Stadium.
However, Hill's arrest just before the Dolphins' first home game of the season led to a controversial beginning of the season for both Tyreek Hill and the Miami Dolphins. Reports suggest that the 30-year-old wide receiver faced such a circumstance due to traffic violations owing to which he was made to lie down on the road and was handcuffed.
However, the treatment that the police officials meted out to Hill for the traffic violation led to widespread debate and discussions, with Olympic legend Justin Gatlin joining in.
Reacting to this, Gatlin took to his official Instagram handle to share his stance on the matter. The 43-year-old former track and field athlete remarked about the safety of citizens from the police officials. He wrote:
"If @cheetah can get treated like this right before a home game...then none of us are safe."
Justin Gatlin shuts comparison between Gout Gout and Usain Bolt
Justin Gatlin recently reacted to the bold comparisons made between 16-year-old Australian track and field athlete Gout Gout and Usain Bolt. This comes after Gout clinched a silver medal over the 200m distance at the 2024 U20 World Championships after registering a run time of 20.60 seconds, 0.01 seconds less than Bolt's record run time of 20.61 seconds registered at the 2002 U20 World Championships.
Following these comparisons between Gout and Bolt, Gatlin has stepped in to give his take on the matter. During an episode of his Ready Set Go podcast, the Brooklyn native stated that it is important to keep young aspiring track and field athletes away from baseless comparisons.
The 43-year-old said (at 1:05:28):
"Stop putting these young athletes on a path that comes with a lot of stress and comes with a lot of pressure. Let them go out there and develop themselves. If anything, let them say, 'No, I’m Gout Gout bro, I’m about to be different. I’m Tebogo, I’m about to be different.'"."
Gatlin was one of the fiercest competitors of Usain Bolt. He also defeated the Jamaican track and field legend at the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London (100m event).
