"The angst, nerves are naturally gonna heighten"- Gretchen Walsh’s sister Alex opens up on making Paris Olympics team, two days before the trials’ end
American swimmer and Gretchen Walsh's elder sister Alex recently expressed her feeelings about qualifying for the Paris Olympics six days after her younger sister. Walsh qualified for the event on the second day of the trials while Alex had to wait till the eighth day of the trials.
Alex Walsh clinched second place in the 200m medley finals behind Kate Douglass to make it to the Olympic team on the eighth day. Gretchen, on the other hand, won the 100m butterfly event on the second day to qualify for her first quadrennial games.
On an episode of the Unfiltered Waters podcast, Alex stated that making it to the US Olympic team six days after her sister was a hard feeling for her. She also mentioned that her nerves were high at the point of the trials as she had to wait for a prolonged period to make it to the team. She said (10:02 onwards):
"Gretchen had broken the world record on the first night and makes the Olympic team the second night and I waited until day eight I guess to make the team. That definitely was hard. I think having that long of a time just the angst, the nerves like they are just naturally gonna heighten."
Walsh further added:
"So coming out of Olympic trials, I was relieved to make the team but disappointed with how I swam so I just wanted to refocus for Paris."
Alex Walsh competed in the 200m medley race at the Paris Games but was disqualified from the event for an illegal movement in her swimming transition. Her sister Gretchen Walsh bagged two gold and two silver medals at the Paris Games.

Gretchen Walsh and her elder sister, Alex also competed together at the 2024 Short Course World Championships. Gretchen's campaign during the event was a historic one which ended with her winning seven gold medals.
Her gold medals came in the events: 50m and 100m freestyle, 50m and 100m butterfly, 100m medley, 4x100m freestyle, and 4x100m medley. Additionally Walsh also broke several world records in the 100m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 100m medley events, etc.
Alex Walsh also clinched four medals at the competition, including a gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay, a bronze in the 200m breaststroke, and a silver in the 200m medley event.
