"These are world champions"-Noah Lyles issues clarification for US Open winners after NBA controversy that resurfaced after the Paris Olympics
Noah Lyles issued a clarification for his 'World Champions' claim for the winners of the US Open. The American athlete was in the spotlight after his comments on the NBA went viral on social media attracting a lot of criticism from fans and NBA players.
Lyles rhetorically questioned champions of the NBA finals calling themselves 'World Champions'. This statement came after his triumph at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest.
"You know the thing that hurts me the most is that I have to watch the NBA Finals and they have 'world champion' on their head. World champion of what? The United States? Don't get me wrong, I love the U.S. at times, but that ain't the world...We are the world. We are the world. We have almost every country out here fighting, thriving, putting on their flag to show they are represented. There ain’t no flags in the NBA," he said.
Noah Lyles attended the women's finals of the US Open between Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula. He was asked about his take on the winners of the US Open and whether he thought they were World Champions.
"These are World Champions. International players that play against the top in the world constantly, these are world champions," he said.
Noah Lyles current banter with Tyreek Hill due to his 'World Champions' claim
Noah Lyles' comments on 'World Champion' resurfaced after he lost the top podium position in the men's 200m at the Paris Olympics. Dolphins wide receiver, Tyreek Hill spoke about Lyles and claimed to defeat the athlete in a race easily.
“Noah Lyles can't say nothing after what just happened to him. You know what I'm saying? Then he want to come out and pretend like he's sick. I feel like that's like horseradish. So, for him to do that and say that we're not world champions of like our sport, like come on, bro, just speak on what you know about, you know what I'm saying? And that's track. I would beat Lyles. No, I wouldn't beat him by a lot, but I would beat Noah Lyles,” he said.
After this interview, the two athletes have been going back and forth on social media with Tyreek Hill challenging him to a race. On the other hand, the 100m Olympic Champion chose to snub the Dolphins' WR, fueling the banter once again.
