WATCH: Mikaela Shiffrin shares glimpses of hyperbaric chamber as she continues recovery after devastating crash during the World Cup
Mikaela Shiffrin shared a glimpse of the hyperbaric chamber that she uses for her recovery after a high-speed crash during the Alpine Skiing World Cup a couple of weeks ago. The American Alpine skier thanked the people who have been helping her to make a swift recovery as the Alpine skiing season progresses.
The 29-year-old skier suffered a devastating crash while competing at the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup in Killington moments before the finish line. She veered off the track and hit the protective fencing.
Shiffrin was soon attended by the ski patrol and taken to a nearby medical center for further examination. Hours later she took to social media to express that she had suffered an abrasion in her hip, which restricted her movement.
The severity of the injury was such that Mikaela Shiffrin had to undergo urgent surgery as her wound cavity was filled with clotted blood. She has been frequently sharing updates about her recovery with fans and recently took to Instagram to share a glimpse of the hyperbaric chamber that is an integral part of her recovery. The hyperbaric chamber helps the body recover by providing pure oxygen at a pressure greater than the normal air pressure.
Moreover, she thanked the people who played an important role in helping her recover as quickly as possible."Just a little appreciation post for all who have been helping me in this process to recover as well as possible!Basic movements are starting to get easier and more fluid, and in general the soreness is improving a bit which is just wonderful (esp for my ability to get in and out of bed)🥴😁," she wrote.
What exactly led Mikaela Shiffrin to undergo an urgent surgery?
Mikaela Shiffrin's initial diagnosis after the crash revealed that she was out of danger and suffered an abrasion in her hip that had restricted her movement. She took to Instagram to reveal that she would undergo urgent surgery a week later, as she had a cavity deeper than the wound, which had old clotted blood, and it wasn't properly draining.
"Gotta love a curveball…😅 Had a little unexpected surgery on Thursday evening after feeling a bit under the weather. Turns out I had a little cavity deeper than the wound tract that was filled with old hematoma and wasn’t properly draining with wound vac or normal packing," she wrote.
Furthermore, she revealed that the biggest downside of undergoing surgery was that she would not get up to watch her teammates compete at the Birds of Prey World Cup.
