What happened to Jakob Ingebrigtsen at the 2024 Copenhagen half-marathon? All about the Norwegian's halt after 10 km-mark

Paris Olympics gold medalist Jakob Ingebrigtsen ran his debut half-marathon on Saturday (September 15) at the 2024 Copenhagen half-marathon event. However, the Norwegian abruptly halted after running the 10 Km-mark as he was too tired and was also not prepared physically to complete the half-marathon event.

The Norwegian long-distance runner finished in the 34th position in the event with a run time of 1:03:13. Kenya's Sabastian Sawe clinched the top position on the podium in 58:05, while Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda and Isaia Lasoi of Kenya clinched silver and bronze medal finishes with run times of 58:09 and 58:10.

Coming just after running the 1500m at the 2024 Diamond League finals in Brussels, Ingebrigtsen revealed that he was not mentally prepared for the event during a post-match conversation. The two-time Olympic medalist also stated that the distance of the event was not suitable for him.

He said during a post-match interview (via Olympics.com):

"Twenty-one km is definitely too long! I’m definitely not going to try again for a couple of years. It’s fun but tough. I tried to stay with the leading group for as long as I could."

He further added:

"“I think I did a Norwegian record for 10km and that’s good enough for me today. I had no chance mentally and my legs are definitely too tired. I’m not prepared enough to stay the whole distance today but a lot of fun to finish off my season."

Even after finishing 34th in the half-marathon event, Jakob Ingebrigtsen set a new 10K Norwegian record with a run time of 27:27.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen performed superbly on Friday (September 13) to clinch the first position in the Men's 1500m event of the final Diamond League meet of the season. This comes after his three consecutive podium finishes in the Diamond League meets (in Lausanne, Silesia, and Zurich) following the Paris quadrennial event.

The Norwegian athlete registered a run time of 3:30.37 to hold off Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Timothy Cheruiyot and reigning 1500m World Champion Cole Hocker and win the Diamond League event. Chruiyot and Hocker eventually settled for the second and third positions with run times of 3:30.37 and 3:30.94 respectively.

This was also Jakob Ingebrigtsen's fifth Diamond League meet victory in this 2024 track and field season.
