"Wouldn't have survived the past 3 years if it wasn't for Lexi Rodriguez": Nebraska Cornhuskers' Merritt Beason pays emotional tribute to co-captain
Nebraska Cornhuskers' Merritt Beason recently paid an emotional tribute to her co-captain Lexi Rodriguez. Rodriguez was playing for the Cornhuskers for the last time at the NCAA National Volleyball Championships, where they lost to the Penn State Lions in the semifinals in a tightly contested match.
In a conversation after the match, Beason mentioned,
"It's an honor. It's an honor to be a captain at the Nebraska [Cornhuskers], but it's an even bigger honor to be a captain alongside Lexi Rodriguez."
Beason further added,
"I mean she's obviously an amazing player, but an even better person, and I wouldn't have survived the past 3 years, especially this year, if it wasn't for her."
Lexi Rodriguez was equally emotional as she addressed the post-game press conference. In her words,
"All the people, all my teammates, and all the coaches. Just everyone, every single person part of this program. Just truly amazing people and they just really changed my life and they just believed in me every single person, every single day from the moment I stepped on campus and you can't find that anywhere, you truly can't. I'm just so grateful for everyone and I'll say it for my entire life that this program was the best thing that ever happened to me," she said.
Despite starting strong, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, under the leadership of Lexi Rodriguez and Merritt Beason, went down to the Penn State Lions by a narrow margin of 2-3 in terms of sets. Penn State Lions will now face Louisville Cardinals in the finals of the NCAA Championships.
Lexi Rodriguez pens an emotional farewell note
The current NCAA Championships was the final time that Lexi Rodriguez represented the Nebraska Cornhuskers, both as a captain and a player. The 21-year-old skipper had penned an emotional note for her team on Instagram.
Terming her previous four years as a 'dream come true', Rodriguez wrote,
"To all my teammates, coaches, staff, and all of husker nation, thank you for giving me so much love & support, you guys truly made this place feel like home! It has been a privilege to put on the Nebraska jersey these past 4 years and represent such a historical program. I am leaving this program a more confident & joyful Lexi Rodriguez, and I hope I was able to impact this place as much as it impacted me!"
Lexi Rodriguez was recently awarded the All-American honor, becoming only the third player from the Cornhuskers to earn this honor for all four years. She had previously led the team to the finals of the Big Ten Conference League in 2023, where they lost to the Texas Longhorns by 0-3.
