“My wife is pregnant”— The Voice contestant Jan Dan opens up about first baby during Battles round one
In one of the most intense moments of Season 26 of The Voice, Jan Dan gave an incredible performance in the Battle rounds, which aired on October 21, while waiting for his first child's birth. He told the band during practice,
"The words in the song are literally what I'm living right now. My wife is pregnant — and with our first child!"
When Gwen Stefani, Jan Dan's coach on Team Gwen, chose Stevie Wonder's classic song For Once in My Life for him and his competitor Jaylen Dunham, she had no idea how much the lyrics would reflect Jan Dan's personal life. I Have Someone Who Needs Me became a metaphor for the dad-to-be.
The panel of coaches, including Gwen Stefani, Reba McEntire, and Snoop Dogg, were left in awe, not just by his vocal abilities but by his incredible composure in the face of such significant personal stakes. Snoop Dogg jokingly added,
"Get the scissors. He’s gonna have to cut that umbilical cord!"
Grace under pressure: Jan Dan’s performance in The Voice
Jan Dan and Jaylen Dunham delivered a powerful duet of Stevie Wonder's "For Once in My Life." Both singers were impressed, but Jan's deeper connection to the lyrics stood out. Reba McEntire was so moved by the performance she needed several tissues.
The coaches liked both artists, but Jan’s personal situation made it more compelling. Reflecting on the song, Jan shared that it resonated with him as he was feeling stressed about becoming a dad, and he channeled that emotion into his passionate performance.
Despite the stress, Jan stayed calm and focused, and his performance ultimately won him the round. Gwen Stefani and the other coaches thought he was very talented, and Gwen chose him as the winner. She told him she liked the way he sang and, just for fun, said Jan might want to name his baby "Gwen."
Winning the battle and awaiting his baby’s arrival in The Voice
Even though the night was very emotional, Jan Dan could stay calm and collected during the Battle round. Not only did getting on The Voice feel like a victory for him, but he also knew his baby was on the way. Jaylen Dunham, his competitor, also did a great job, but Jan's sincerity and connection to the song were what won him the round in the end.
After declaring him the winner, Gwen Stefani said,
"I’m excited to get deeper into his confidence and getting him a little bit more stage presence."
The night ended on a high note for Jan Dan, who is now the Battle Round champion. The Voice fans and the coaches were amazed at how he handled the stress of competition and the joy of becoming a parent. She said,
"I think he’s got it all. Now let’s see if he really names the baby ‘Gwen!’"
As he left the stage with both a victory in the Battle round and the anticipation of becoming a father, it was clear that Jan had a lot to look forward to in the days ahead.
New episodes of The Voice air every Monday and Tuesday at 8 pm ET/PT on NBC.
