New York Liberty vs. Phoenix Mercury Starting Lineups and Depth Charts for Aug. 26 | 2024 WNBA Season
The Phoenix Mercury faces tough opposition in the form of New York Liberty on Monday. The Liberty have already secured a playoff spot. They now enter a pressure-free stretch of an already memorable WNBA season, but the Mercury is still fighting to reach the postseason.
Don't make the mistake of assuming the Liberty will treat this trip to Footprint Center as some kind of meaningless matchup though, especially after what happened last night.
Sandy Brondello’s women come into the game off the back of just one defeat in their last nine games. A narrow 72-64 loss to Connecticut Sun came as the Liberty’s latest result, which they will hope to change.
The Mercury, on the other hand, avoided a third defeat after the break with an 80-82 win against the Atlanta Dream on Saturday. However, they fluctuate between defeats and wins, which will mean nothing as they face a side who have a 11-3 road record. They will be underdogs here, but could be buoyed by the Liberty’s recent result.

The Liberty will be without Betnijah Laney-Hamilton, who is still recovering from a knee injury. Otherwise, the rest of their roster is healthy and available for play. Nate Tibbetts could field a starting lineup featuring Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, Natasha Cloud, Kahleah Copper, and Sophie Cunningham. However, with Celeste Taylor being traded to the Connecticut Sun, players like Mikiah Herbert and Natasha Mack will be competing for more minutes off the bench.
New York Liberty vs. Phoenix Mercury: One player to watch
Sabrina Ionescu
Sabrina Ionescu can't be looked past in terms of scoring at the moment, with her improved form of late seeing her putting game-high 33-points past the reigning champions, Las Vegas Aces.
The 26-year-old sharp shooter is consistently active on both ends of the court, and playing exquisite passes across the court and shooting from the arc whenever necessary. She will be expected to help the Liberty return to winning ways.
