A'ja Wilson ties Breanna Stewart's distinguished WNBA scoring record after solid offensive game vs Lynx
The sustained excellence of superstars A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart continues to dazzle basketball fans. Rivals in the WNBA, the two recently led Team USA to another gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The two are expected to be on top of their game for at least a few more years.
On Friday, Wilson had 24 points, seven rebounds and three assists in the Las Vegas Aces’ 87-74 loss to the Minnesota Lynx. Despite her superb game, the defending champs lost for the third straight time to Napheesa Collier and Co.
The loss disappointed A'ja Wilson but her latest achievement put her on the same level as Breanna Stewart. “Across the Timeline” pointed out what the reigning WNBA Finals MVP just did:
“That's 4,500 points for A'ja Wilson!
“A'ja got to 4,500 in 217 games, tied with Breanna Stewart for fastest to 4,500 in WNBA regular season history.”
The X/Twitter account continued:
“Not only did both A'ja and Stewie get to 4,500 in 217 regular season games, they both got to that mark in a game against the Lynx at Target Center -- Wilson tonight and Stewart nearly a year ago (August 26, 2023).”
The numbers piled up by the two power forwards are eerily similar and mind-boggling. That they would accomplish the same feat against the Minnesota Lynx is almost unbelievable.
What is easy to see, though, is the excellence sustained by A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart since they entered the WNBA. They have faced each other in three of the last four postseasons. The two headlined last year’s finals where Wilson’s Aces edged Stewart’s Liberty. They are likely headed for more duels down the road.
Lynx could be a familiar foe in this year’s playoffs for A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart
The similarities could continue for A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart in the playoffs. Minnesota’s win against Las Vegas improved its record to 21-8 and dropped its opponents’ win-loss slate to 17-11. The Lynx sit atop the Western Conference but third overall behind the New York Liberty (25-4) and Connecticut Sun (21-7).
The Lynx won the season series against the Aces 3-1 and have the edge against the Liberty 2-1. Minnesota won the Commissioner’s Cup title by beating Stewart’s team 94-89 in late June. The Lynx could be a thorn in the sides “Stewie” and Wilson in this year’s playoffs.
Each WNBA team has 10-11 games remaining before the playoff seedings are determined. The Minnesota Lynx, with the way they have performed this season, could derail a rematch of last year’s mouthwatering Finals.
