Angel Reese mirrors Shaquille O'Neal's NBA milestone with rare WNBA rookie feat
Angel Reese is having a terrific rookie season with the Chicago Sky and now shares a rare achievement with Shaquille O'Neal.
Despite her flaws on offense, the forward has proven that she's an elite rebounder, using her skills under the rim to set records in the WNBA. On Friday night, despite the Sky's loss to the Connecticut Sun, Reese finished the game with another double-double after scoring 13 points and grabbing 20 rebounds.
This stat line made Reese the first rookie to record back-to-back 20-rebound games since Shaquille O'Neal, one of Reese's strongest supporters and mentors.
This performance came after Reese dropped 19 points and secured 20 rebounds in front of the Phoenix Mercury in a blowout 86-68 loss. It took 31 years for fans to see this type of performance again.
The then Orlando Magic rookie had dominant performances with 21 and 25 rebounds against the Boston Celtics and Washington Bullets, respectively, in April 1993.
Unfortunately, Reese failed to take the Sky to victory in both those games, suffering painful defeats against two playoff contenders.
Reese and Shaq have a strong bond, with the four-time NBA champion lauding the Sky rookie for representing their alma mater, LSU, in a big fashion.
The former LA Lakers and Miami Heat star made Angel Reese his first signature with Reebok's basketball division last year, showing more support for the forward. Now that she's in the league, Shaquille O'Neal keeps hyping up Reese, even making a case for her as the Rookie of the Year.
Angel Reese can break another record with her double-doubles
The Chicago Sky still have 12 games left in the regular season, meaning that Angel Reese will have the chance to add more to her impressive campaign.
With her 21st double-double of the season, she's one double-double away from tying Tina Charles' harvest for the most by a WNBA rookie. Charles reached this mark in 2010 when she was a member of the Connecticut Sun.
Considering her level of performance, it's not a matter of if but when she will tie and surpass Charles, especially with the Sky still trying to secure a spot in the postseason. Reese is averaging 13.6 points and 12.6 rebounds per game, but those numbers haven't been good enough to get more wins.
Reese and the Sky will return to the court against the Las Vegas Aces this Sunday in another duel against a title contender, scheduled at noon ET.
