"Angel’s kryptonite": WNBA fans react as Wings temporarily suspend contract of Paige Bueckers’ teammate Teaira McCowan

When it rains, it pours for the Dallas Wings. They've gone through a rough patch to start the 2025 WNBA season, and their already thin roster just got quite thinner.

Like several teams, they will lose some key players this month due to the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 championship. In the Wings' case, they will be forced to try and tread water without the likes of Teaira McCowan and Luisa Geiselsöder.

With that in mind, Paige Bueckers' Dallas decided to temporarily suspend their contracts on Sunday, which is a standard practice in these situations.

Fans flooded social media with their thoughts and predictions about it.

"Angel’s kryptonite lol," one fan said.

Others, however, knew it was just a temporary decision and a matter of time before McCowan was back on the court.

"And I was gonna pick her up smh," one fan said.

McCowan, who's signed to a three-year deal worth $587,100, per Spotrac, has been in the league for seven years, and this is her fourth season with the Wings. Despite playing roughly 13.0 minutes a game, she's made an impact on both ends of the floor with 4.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest on 56.7% from the floor.

She will play for the Turkish national team and will leave on June 14. Also, with Geiselsöder already leaving to join the German national squad, Detroit will be left without a traditional center on the roster. The women's EuroBasket tournament will be held from June 18 to 29 in Czechia, Germany, Italy and Greece.

So far, the team has tried to get by with PFs Myeshia Hines-Allen and NaLyssa Smith to anchor the paint, but with little success.

Wings rookie Paige Bueckers' return was delayed due to illness

Notably, Paige Bueckers isn't used to having these kinds of seasons. The national champion and UConn legend entered the league with high expectations as the No. 1 pick, but her team's woes have been too much to overcome.

So far, the Wings have gone a league-worst 1-8 this season. Bueckers was supposed to suit up after missing three games due to a concussion, but her return to the court will be delayed, as she's also dealing with an illness:

"Just dealing with an illness and just being extremely cautious and supportive as an organization," Wings coach Chris Koclanes told ESPN before Sunday's game. "Hope to have her back soon."

While Buckers' team hasn't fared well at all, she has looked like her usual self and like a fish in the water in the pros, averaging 14.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game on 43.3% shooting.
