Breanna Stewart heartbroken as Liberty star joins Valkyries in Expansion Draft
Breanna Stewart was heartbroken after her New York Liberty teammate Kayla Thornton joined the Golden State Valkyries in the WNBA Expansion Draft. Thornton wasn't among the six players the Liberty secured before the Expansion Draft and the Valkyries made the most of the opportunity by selecting the 2024 WNBA champion.
The three-time WNBA champion made a post on her social media, sharing her feelings about the latest move.
"Love you @k_thorntond 💔," Stewart wrote.

It is not just the Liberty squad that was unhappy with parting ways with Thornton. In a post on X, formerly known as "Twitter," Stewie revealed someone else who was going to get hurt with the Liberty's move; and it was her three-year-old daughter Ruby.
From what it appears from the picture posted on Liberty's social media, little Ruby and Thornton shared a bond. The Liberty X handle posted a picture of the former Liberty player and Stewart's daughter having a blast in the locker room.
"Ruby gonna be pissed 😠," she wrote on X.
Ruby will certainly have questions and it falls on Stewart to address them.
Nyara Sabally, Sabrina Ionescu joins Breanna Stewart in mourning over Kayla Thornton's trade to Valkyrie
New York Liberty teammates Sabrina Ionescu and Nyara Sabally also reacted to the news of Kayla Thornton joining the Golden State Valkyries. The Liberty social media handle made a "Thank You" post dedicated to Thornton, and it received reactions from the Liberty teammates.
Thornton's Liberty teammate Nyara Sabally was in "pain" after the latest move.
"Pain 😪," Sabally wrote in the comment.
Sabrina Ionescu reacted with a big no.
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOO," wrote heartbroken Ionescu.
Breanna Stewart commented with several crying face emojis.

Breanna Stewart has previously spoken about how Thornton's impact on both ends of the floor was crucial for them. According to Clutch Points, she called Thornton "a great 3-and-D player."
Thornton has the ability to shoot big-open 3-point shots. However, her biggest impact lies in her suffocating defense against the best players on the opposing teams, something that doesn't appear on the stat sheet.
Thronton played two seasons with the Liberty, playing all 80 games. Last season, she averaged 5.5 points, 2.6 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.2 blocks per game.
