"Didn’t she change clothes before the ceremony?" - WNBA fans question Cathy Engelbert’s wardrobe choice at Finals trophy presentation
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert is catching flak from fans after she chose a questionable outfit during Game 5 of the Finals on Sunday. The New York Liberty overcame the Minnesota Lynx in the final stage of the postseason in overtime, 67-62. The Liberty took home the trophy but the fans paid more attention to Engelbert's attire.
During the handing of the trophy, the commissioner wore a New York City Skyline dress, which became controversial among fans. Given that one of the teams that played in the Finals was located in New York, Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic, who covers the Minnesota Timberwolves, thought it was "not a good look."
Here are some of what the fans said about Engelbert's choice of clothing.
"Didn’t she change clothes before the ceremony?" one fan said.
"Could you imagine the Lynx had won, and she presented them the trophy while wearing a New York dress? That’s kinda messed up," another fan said.
"I don’t want to be like this, but you can’t tell me the fix wasn’t in when Cathy is literally wearing the NYC Skyline on her dress," a fan said.
Game 5 was also filled with controversy due to the uncalled fouls by the officials. Fans brought this to light amid Engelbert's wardrobe choice.
"Definitely not a good look. The commission certainly looks biased here with this dress and the refs definitely called the game down the stretch to favor New York," one fan said.
"Especially with what just happened," another fan referred to the controversial officiating.
"The Lynx were absolutely ROBBED!" a fan said.
Sydney Colson trolls Cathy Engelbert on social media
Aside from the controversial officiating on Game 5, fans were fixated on Cathy Engelbert's dress. Las Vegas Aces player Sydney Colson took advantage of the opportunity to take a bit of a shot at the Commissioner.
Colson uploaded a photo of herself wearing the exact dress that Engelbert wore on Sunday. The WNBA player was at a clothing store and tried on the dress, while inside the store. She uploaded a picture of the outfit on her X (formerly Twitter) account.
Her teammate, A'ja Wilson, was quick to share her reaction to the post. The 2024 WNBA MVP also shared the image that her teammate posted.
"Syd Pls! 😩😂" Wilson posted.
The WNBA Commissioner hasn't addressed the controversy that emerged due to what she wore in the Finals.
