DiJonai Carrington urges Jayson Tatum to bring WNBA team to Boston amid his reported $200M bid interest

Connecticut Sun player DiJonai Carrington is urging Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum to bring a WNBA team to Boston. On Tuesday, Carrington posted on X (formerly Twitter) expressing her desire to see a women's pro basketball team in the city. Her post followed reports of Tatum’s interest in bidding for a WNBA expansion team.

On Monday, Essence's Kimberly Wilson reported that Tatum is willing to bid $200 million for a St. Louis franchise in the WNBA. The star hails from St. Louis, Missouri and signed a five-year, $315 million contract extension with the Celtics in July.

According to Wilson, Tatum has partnered with Richard Chaifetz and David Hoffman to strengthen the reported bid. The investment group headlined by the Celtics star has named the potential WNBA team's home court at the Chaifetz Arena at Saint Louis University.

DiJonai Carrington reshared this post on X after it was reported, sparking curiosity about the possibility of another East Coast WNBA team.

"What about a bid to move a team to Boston??🙂" the California-native player posted.

The NBA signed a new collective bargaining agreement in 2023. This regulation permits NBA players "to take ownership stakes in WNBA teams, opening new avenues for investment and representation in women’s sports."

Next season, the WNBA will welcome its 13th team. The Golden State Valkyries will become part of the league, followed by franchises in Toronto and Portland in 2026.

DiJonai Carrington is set to participate in the inaugural season of Unrivaled

Along with other stars in the WNBA, DiJonai Carrington will join the new 3x3 basketball league, Unrivaled. Carrington had a breakout year in the 2024 season, averaging 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists. The defensive guard was named the Most Improved Player and was part of the All-Defensive First Team.

Carrington joined other WNBA stars who will participate in the league's inaugural season. Kelsey Plum, Angel Reese, Kate Martin and other stars have been announced as participants in Unrivaled.

The league was founded by stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart and will start their season in Miami in January. It will run for eight weeks.
