"F**K KU": Sophie Cunningham makes her opinion clear on Mizzou-Kansas rivalry as the Border War returns
WNBA veteran Sophie Cunningham shared a strong message about the Missouri Tigers versus Kansas Jayhawks matchup on Sunday. It came after the official Instagram account of Missouri's Men's basketball shared a video on Thursday of its fans chanting The Killers' iconic song "Mr. Brightside" alongside a message highlighting that they're only thinking about their archrivals.
"Time to shift all focus toward one thing … 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗮𝗿 😤," @mizzouhoops captioned.
Cunningham took to the comments section and left an NSFW message for Kansas.
"I mean, I'll say it.... F**k KU! F**K KU! F**K KU!" Cunningham wrote.
She then shared the video on her Instagram stories.
"IYKYK," which stands for "if you know, you know," Cunningham captioned.
This matchup was labeled as the oldest in Division 1 rivalry west of the Mississippi River by Sports Illustrated in 2011.
Called the "Border War" or "Border Showdown" since 2004, these multiple-sports duels always bring a lot of attention from fans of each program. The most intense part of the rivalry is seen during football and men's basketball games, which makes Sunday's matchup a special one.
After Missouri left the Big 12 Conference to join the Southeastern Conference in 2012, it didn't play a regular season game for several years. The rivalry was renewed with an exhibition game in 2017 to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey. In 2021, they played an official game again, with the Jayhawks beating the Tigers 102-65. They also won the next two games, on Dec. 10, 2022 and Dec. 9, 2023.
Cunningham played for the Tigers from 2015 to 2019, so she didn't face the Jayhawks in the regular season but she is taking the rivalry seriously.
Sophie Cunningham leaves message to the media using infamous Russell Westbrook video
Before calling out the Kansas Jayhawks, Sophie Cunningham sent another strong message to the media and fans who think they know her. Using a video of Russell Westbrook saying that the media tries to portray him as something that he isn't, Westbrook clapped back at his doubters on Tuesday.
The Phoenix Mercury guard shared the clip on her stories after commenting on it, echoing Westbrook's feelings. She had a solid 2024 WNBA season, but off-court issues made her a target of several fans for supporting Donald Trump on social media.
