Gabby Williams schools 4-time TEDx talker for calling her entitled after explaining how WNBA should compensate international players

Seattle Storm star Gabby Williams schooled author and four-time TEDx talker Dre Baldwin after he called her "entitled" for her views about seeking better compensation from the WNBA. Baldwin said that the league did not make enough revenue to pay players more despite them feeling like they deserved it.

Responding to a clip of Williams speaking about how the WNBA could compensate international players better, Baldwin tweeted:

"1. The league does not earn enough money to pay players more. They are already overpaying players and ridiculously raising salaries while still losing money.
"2. When you accept a job, you accept the pay that comes with it. No one 'has to' pay you more money just because you feel like you deserve it. Don’t take the job. She had that option. The entitlement of these players is baffling."

Williams clapped back on Baldwin's argument for calling her entitled. She doubled down on the points she made for better compensation, highlighting her decision to not play in the WNBA for the first half of the season and playing internationally instead, where she claimed she got better pay.

"I didn’t take the job and took the higher paying one for a long time. i was asked why and explained. i was asked what it would take to come back and explained. hope this helps!" Williams tweeted.

After the conclusion of her 2024 WNBA season, Gabby Williams is now an unrestricted free agent in the league. The American-French forward concluded the season averaging 10.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals in the 12 games she played.

Gabby Williams calls out WNBA for unfulfilled pay promises

Gabby Williams has criticized WNBA's pay structure in the past. She doubled down on her opinion during the Seattle Storm's exit interview on Thursday. Williams called out the league for various unfulfilled pay promises it allegedly made to players and highlighted that they need to be paid more to ensure that they keep playing in the WNBA.

"The W(NBA) thinks that they don't have to pay us more in order for us to be here. And I think I didn't express that when I first talked about prioritization," Williams said. "Our commissioner talked about us being able to make $700,000. That's actually not true at all. There's not one player who makes that.
"We were promised team marketing agreements and league marketing agreements, but they've fallen quite short. So it's still not enough for us international players to want to stay here. And that's a choice of the players. If I make a choice to make more money, whatever, and then teams are mad that I don't come back, but that's how it is.
"The WNBA, if you want us to be here, you have to pay us more. It's business, it's how it works, and that's all that means."

As an unrestricted free agent ahead of the 2025 season, it will be interesting to see if Gabby Williams will stick around in the WNBA or decide to play overseas for better compensation.
