Germany vs France Preview and Prediction for 2024 Paris Olympics Women's Basketball | August 7
Germany and France face off in the 2024 Paris Olympics women's basketball knockouts on Wednesday. Both teams finished 2-1 in group play heading into their first win-or-go-home matchup.
France is coming off a 79-72 loss to a strong Australia team, where four players scored over 10 points, while only starting French forward Gabby Williams managed double figures. Both teams shot over 59 percent, and France even knocked down more shots from beyond the arc, but it fell behind early and never caught back up to Australia.
They are being led in this Olympics by Williams, who has been stellar in all areas, totaling 26 points and 15 assists combined in France's two previous group play wins. Guard Marine Johannes has also played well this tournament, but shot just 4-12 against Australia and scored under 10 points for the first time this summer.
Germany has played well in group play, suffering their only loss to the top-ranked USA women's team by a score of 87-68. Their top player, center Satou Sabally of the Dallas Wings, led them with 15 points and 5 rebounds. She was terrific in their prior game against Japan, pacing the team with 33 points en route to a 75-64 victory.
Sabally's sister, Nyara, missed their last two matches, with reports saying she is evaluating the severity of a potential concussion. It's unclear if she'll return for the matchup against France, which would be a huge boost for the German side — she scored 16 points in 24 minutes alongside her sister's 17 in their first Olympic match against Belgium.
Germany vs France Olympics Women's Basketball Prediction
The two squads last faced off in June 2023, with the French team winning 58-50. It was a close game throughout, with both teams struggling to shoot the ball, but the difference came in ball security as Germany committed 22 turnovers compared to France's 11.
Expect an extremely close, tough matchup between two teams looking to avenge their first losses as they play their first sudden-death games of the Olympics. Germany has the edge on the inside, with Sabally likely to see plenty of touches and push for a 20-point effort, but France has the stronger squad all around and can pull out the win with efficient shooting.
Look for France to stay alive and squeeze out a victory by less than 10 points.
