Ashley Nicole Moss (L) hits out at Riley Gaines for framing Simone Biles

"Girl, shut up": Ashley Nicole Moss pulls no punches for Riley Gaines framing Simone Biles' apology as "groveling" amid trans athlete debate

CBS Sports' Ashley Nicole Moss hit out at conservative activist Riley Gaines for framing Simone Biles' apology as "groveling" as the debate on trans athletes rages. It followed the Olympic gold medalist's apology on Tuesday for letting frustration get the better of her as she got personal with Gaines.

The issue stemmed from Gaines slamming a transgender athlete's participation on a Minnesota high school softball team, referring to the player as "a boy."

Biles picked up the cudgels for the player, calling Gaines a "bully" and "straight up sore loser" on a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Speaking on Fox News on Wednesday, Riley Gaines gave her take on Biles' apology:

“I accept her apology and see this as a really big win. You have this famous public figure now issuing a groveling public apology and backtracks after tweeting pro-trans propaganda, if you will.”

Moss, though, took issue on how Riley Gaines framed Biles' apology, letting her have it in the comments section of the post of The Intellectualist:

“Groveling apology” girl, shut up."

The issue of trans athletes remains a contentious issue around the sports world amid the push for inclusivity.

Riley Gaines expresses concern over transgender athletes competing in women's sports

While the push to include transgenders in women's sports gains support, among those who are staunchly against it is Riley Gaines, who has fairness and safety concerns.

A star college swimmer at Kentucky and campaigns against trans athletes in women's sports, Gaines said that everyone is entitled and encouraged to do sports, but it has to be in a fair setting.

“I believe every single person is entitled — actually — I encourage every single person to play sports because I’ve reaped the benefits of what sports have meant for me in terms of leadership and competence, and setting goals and working to achieve those goals, all things that are very much playing out in my life,” Gaines told the Deseret News in an interview last year.
She went to say, “[However] I don’t think a third category (for transgender athletes) would suffice. Because at the end of the day, you would still very much have males competing against females. So, do you further break it down between males who identify as women? And then, do you go even further? Again, fairness and safety matter, even on the men’s side."

In the same article on The Deseret News on Gaines, it was reported that most Americans say transgender athletes shouldn't be allowed to play women's sports. Citing a Gallup survey, 69% of the 1,000 adults surveyed believed that people should play on a team that matches their sex at birth.
