Is Jonquel Jones playing tonight against Chicago Sky? Latest on 5x WNBA All-Star's availability (June 10)
New York Liberty star Jonquel Jones is ruled out for Tuesday’s game against the Chicago Sky. She participated in Thursday’s game against the Washington Mystics, which the Liberty won 86-78, but the five-time WNBA All-Star picked up an ankle injury in the first quarter and had to be helped to the locker room.
Jones’ injury didn’t seem to be too severe but the Liberty are sidelining her on Monday. Jones had led the New York Liberty to their first championship in 2024 and won the Finals MVP.
She's off to a good start this season, averaging 13.9 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Jones has been impactful on both ends of the floor, recording 1.3 blocks.
Thanks to her stellar form, the Liberty have won all eight games. Their perfect start to the season was in jeopardy against the Indiana Fever on May 23, but Jones stepped up with 26 points, 12 rebounds and three assists on 9-for-15 shooting as New York won 90-88.
With Jonquel Jones dealing with an ankle injury, Liberty’s backup center Nyara Sabally could see more minutes. She has missed six games this season but has been valuable off the bench, recording 4.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Her numbers should improve if she gets more minutes in Jones' absence.
Following Jonquel Jones' injury, the New York Liberty’s perfect start now depends on Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart
Following Jonquel Jones’ injury, Sabrina Ionenscu and Breanna Stewart will need to pick up a heavier load on offense to keep the Liberty’s perfect streak alive. They have won eight straight games and are atop the Eastern Conference.
Sabrina Ionescu has been a huge part of their stellar run, averaging 17.3 points, 5.0 assists and 4.1 rebounds this season. Meanwhile, Breanna Stewart has also been solid, recording 19.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.3 blocks per game.
Ionescu and Stewart will face their first real challenge without Jonquel Jones as they get ready to host the Chicago Sky at the Barclays Center on Tuesday. The game tips off at 8 p.m. EDT.
