Jason Whitlock eulogizes Pete Rose, inserts Caitlin Clark comparison: "Handed the torch of courage and masculinity to a 22-year-old woman"
Jason Whitlock recently paid tribute to late baseball legend Pete Rose by giving him a eulogy on his show, while also bringing up Caitlin Clark comparisons. Whitlock praised Rose's love of the game, which he thought was passed down to Clark, who plays with the same level of intensity in the WNBA.
Speaking on the latest episode of "Fearless" on his YouTube channel, Whitlock honored the legacy of Rose. The MLB's all-time hits leader, who is banned from entering the Hall of Fame due to allegedly betting on his own team, passed away on Monday at the age of 83.
The sports columnist and podcaster then compared Rose's spirit to the newly-crowned WNBA Rookie of the Year. He understood why fans resonate with Clark like they did at the height of Rose's career with the Cincinnati Reds in the 1970s.
"When I think about Pete Rose, I understand why there's such passion for Caitlin Clark. When Caitlin Clark plays basketball, it reminds you of Pete Rose playing baseball. When you watch Caitlin Clark, it's like holy cow, she puts everything into the game and will risk everything to reach her goals," Whitlock said. [17:00 onwards]
He added:
"I marvel at it, but I'm also halfway disappointed. We've handed this torch of courage and masculinity to a 22-year-old woman. Where are we? We're watching in real-time like they're moving all the rights of passages, the toughness test, the resistance that used to be directed at men to make us stronger. They're now applying that resistance to women to make them stronger."
Pete Rose was nicknamed "Charlie Hustle" because he would play hard regardless of the situation, even if it was the preseason, regular season, or playoffs. He would give his everything for the game of baseball, which is why some were disappointed when he admitted to betting on games when he was a manager for the Cincinnati Reds.
Caitlin Clark is a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies
The Indiana Fever star went viral in September after teammate Lexie Hull uploaded a video of her doing play-by-play while watching the Philadelphia Phillies-Milwaukee Brewers game.
Caitlin Clark explained why she supports the Phillies, as well as other baseball teams such as the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs.
"My boyfriend grew up a really big Phillies fan, so I kinda had to like the Phillies. I do like them, I love Bryce Harper. I still like the Cubs, I like the Yankees. I'm not like a diehard any baseball team. My dad was a big Royals fan," Clark said.
Clark has plenty to cheer for in the 2024 MLB playoffs, since the Phillies and Yankees are among the favorites to win it all and are also a potential World Series matchup.
