"Looking like Tatum in the finals": WNBA fans roast Sabrina Ionescu for dismal outing despite Liberty's WNBA championship win
Despite New York Liberty's monumental 2024 WNBA championship victory, Sabrina Ionescu was largely absent throughout the game. Ionescu, one of the Liberty's top stars, severely struggled in the winner-take-all Game 5, putting up a measly five points, her first time not reaching double digits in this year's Finals.
However, the guard still contributed by securing seven rebounds and setting up her teammates with eight assists. However, some fans were unimpressed and criticized her performance on social media.
One fan on X (formerly Twitter) likened her to Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum, who shot a poor 38.8% in the 2024 NBA Finals:
"Looking like Tatum in the finals 💀"
"Carried to her ring. Her PR team will find a way to sweep this under the rug," one added.
Here are some other fan reactions:
"I can AT LEAST give you 2/19," one tweeted.
"She played terrible. She deserved no credit tonight," another tweeted.
"They expect to get paid more??? 1/19 and 67 total points," one said.
"When you ain’t do s**t on the group assignment and still get an A," another said.
New York Liberty crowned 2024 WNBA Champions despite Sabrina Ionescu's Game 5 shortcomings
Three-time WNBA All-Star Sabrina Ionescu can now add a WNBA championship to her resume after the New York Liberty defeated the Minnesota Lynx in the winner-take-all Game 5, 67-62.
Despite Ionescu's underwhelming scoring, her teammates stepped up to finish the job. Breanna Stewart came up with a huge double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds, and on defense, secured three blocks and a steal.
Jonquel Jones was Liberty's best scorer in Game 5, scoring 17 points. She was named Finals MVP.
Leonie Fiebich and Nyara Sabally had 13 points apiece to help New York's cause.
While Sabrina Ionescu's performance on Sunday was disappointing, she played a prominent role in keeping New York alive in the 2024 WNBA Finals. Prior to Game 5, Ionescu averaged 14.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.0 steals in the first four games and drilled a game-winning buzzer-beater in Game 3.
