"Lowkey cheated for NY": Isaiah Thomas criticizes refs' questionable decisions as Liberty win maiden WNBA title
Isaiah Thomas, like many, reacted to the New York Liberty’s 67-62 overtime win against the Minnesota Lynx in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals on Sunday. Breanna Stewart scored two free throws late in the fourth quarter to extend the game. New York’s defense locked down Minnesota to win its first franchise championship in 28 years.
Thomas said about what led to Stewart’s game-changing free throws:
“They lowkey cheated for NY, but I get it lol.”
The controversial play happened after the New York Liberty had called a timeout with 6.1 seconds in the fourth quarter. Stewart set a screen for Sabrina Ionescu before rolling to the paint. “Stewie,” though, was surprised by the pass and shuffled her feet. The two-time WNBA MVP bumped into Alanna Smith who was called for a foul.
Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve, who was fuming on the sidelines, challenged the call. The referees looked at the replay, but the call wasn’t overturned. Kayla McBride’s 25-footer fell a little short, forcing the game into overtime.
New York hit clutch baskets and impressed on defense to outlast Minnesota in the title-clinching game. Reeve blasted the officiating in the postgame press conference, saying that the championship “was stolen” from the Lynx. Isaiah Thomas couldn’t agree more.
WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert wore a New York-themed outfit in Game 5
The Barclays Center was filled to the rafters by fans who watched Game 5 of the WNBA Finals. New York Liberty fans came in full force to cheer for the home team. They were hoping that Breanna Stewart and Co. would deliver the franchise’s first championship.
WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert joined the crowd in watching the game. While her presence wasn't a surprise, what she wore created a stir on social media.
Engelbert sat on the sidelines wearing a New York-themed outfit for Game 5. The city’s skyline was imprinted on her dress, causing many to blast her on social media.
Engelbert handed the championship trophy to the New York Liberty as fans inside the arena roared in approval. The commissioner’s outfit made her look like one of the Liberty’s supporters.
