Man arrested for stalking Caitlin Clark after 55-year-old sent explicit messages to Fever superstar
Over the past year, Caitlin Clark emerged as one of the biggest names in sports. While the added attention has had its positives, there have also been some not-so-great situations from it. As she gears up for her second season in the WNBA, the star guard has dealt with excessive messages from an over-obsessive fan.
On Monday, reports emerged that police arrested a man for allegedly sending numerous threatening and sexually explicit messages to Clark. Authorities tracked the man to an Indianapolis hotel, but he is a resident of Texas.
When asked about the messages he'd been sending to Caitlin Clark, the 55-year-old man said he was in an imaginary relationship with him. Upon being detained, police have sought out a restraining order to keep him away from the Indiana Fever's home arena.
"No matter how prominent a figure you are, this case shows that online harassment can quickly escalate to actual threats of physical violence,” Prosecutor Ryan Mears said.
The initial reporting also stated that the man could face a sizable punishment for his actions towards Clark. He could potentially be given a six-year prison sentence and a fine of around $10,000.
Caitlin Clark is the latest basketball star to be caught up in stalking scandal
This incident involving Caitlin Clark is far from isolated, as female athletes have had to deal with similar situations in the past. In fact, she is the second rising star in women's basketball to be connected to a stalking charge.
When Clark was at Iowa, Paige Bueckers was another one of the top stars in college. The UConn guard is in her final season now and is expected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 draft.
Bueckers faced a similar situation as the Indiana Fever guard. Back in December, a man pleaded guilty to stalking the potential top pick. The 40-year-old was given a one-year sentence and has to be on probation for three years. On top of this, he has been barred from UConn's facility and all WNBA arenas.
"According to UConn Police, Parmalee told state police that he was going to see Bueckers. Prior to his arrest, Parmalee posted on social media that he was traveling to Connecticut to propose to Bueckers and to get her expelled from UConn."
Bueckers, similar to Caitlin Clark, is expected to be a star-level talent when she reaches the WNBA. This season at UConn, she is averaging 19.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists.
