Milestone Alert: Angel Reese books seat alongside "most dominant" player Shaquille O'Neal with monster game vs Sun
Angel Reese has earned a spot alongside one of the NBA's icons, Shaquille O'Neal, following her performance against the Connecticut Sun on Friday. The Chicago Sky rookie posted 13 points and 20 rebounds in their 82-80 loss, achieving a significant milestone despite the defeat.
According to ESPN Women’s Hoops, Reese is the first player in WNBA history to record 20 or more rebounds in back-to-back games. She is also the first rookie in NBA or WNBA history to have consecutive 20-rebound games since Shaquille O'Neal did so in April 1993 with the Orlando Magic.
Before tonight’s game, Reese already tallied 19 points and 20 rebounds in an 86-68 loss to the Phoenix Mercury. Thanks to Reese’s dominance in the paint, the Sky lead the league in rebounding percentage with 52.0%. They average 37.3 rebounds per game, including 11.5 offensive rebounds.
Angel Reese’s impact on the Sky is significant. With her on the court, the team’s offensive rating is 102.2, compared to 92.3 when she’s not playing. Additionally, their rebounding percentage improves from 42.5 to 54.4 with her presence.
However, Reese’s field goal percentage is a concern, as she only converts 39.8% of her shots. In contrast, Shaquille O'Neal had a career field goal percentage of 58.2%.
Tonight, Reese struggled from the field, going 3-for-12, but converted seven of her attended from the free-throw line.
Looking ahead for Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky
Following their loss to the Connecticut Sun, Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky are in a tough spot, with their record falling to 11-17. Nonetheless, they hold onto eighth place, the final playoff spot.
They’ve caught a break as the Atlanta Dream, who had been on a three-game winning streak, lost to the Phoenix Mercury. Consequently, the Sky (11-17) remains one game ahead of the Dream (10-18) in the standings.
The Sky have the fifth easiest remaining schedule in the league, according to Tankathon, which could benefit them in their playoff chase.
Seven of their final 12 games are at home, including a three-game home stand against the Las Vegas Aces, Washington Mystics and the Caitlin Clark-led Indiana Fever.
They will then hit the road to face the Minnesota Lynx and the Aces before returning home to play the LA Sparks, Dallas Wings and Mystics.
Three of their last four games will be away. Angel Reese's team will first travel to Minnesota to play the Lynx, return home to face the Mercury and then hit the road again to play the Atlanta Dream and Sun to close out the season.
