"Playing every night with broken hearts" - Becky Hammon highlights Courtney Vandersloot's resilience after her mother's passing
Becky Hammon shared her thoughts on Courtney Vandersloot losing her mother following a two-year battle with cancer. Jan Vandersloot was diagnosed with advanced multiple myeloma, embarking on a battle that ended a couple of months ago.
Ahead of Game 2 between the Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty, Hammon shared her thoughts on Vandersloot playing through this horrific situation, praising her for holding up and staying active after this loss.
"Obviously, your heart goes out to her on a human level," Hammon said. "First off, losing your mom — no one loves you like your mom. We had a similar situation with AC, with her father the year before. It’s just heavy, it’s hard. They’re playing every night with broken hearts."
Vandersloot stepped away from the team in June, missing a series of games. The Liberty held a moment of silence in honor of Jan, which was followed by over 10,000 fans chanting "Sloot! Sloot!" to support the 35-year-old guard.
She played 31 games this season, averaging 6.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 44.5% from the field.
During a 2023 interview, Courtney revealed that her mom pushed her to join the Liberty after spending her first 12 seasons with the Chicago Sky.
“I can’t move to New York. Are you kidding me?” Vandersloot recalled, per the Associated Press. “My mom is my biggest fan. She’s the biggest basketball junkie. She loves it. She understood what the opportunity was that was being placed in front of me. She wants this for me. To have her blessing, she understood.”
Becky Hammon supports Teresa Weatherspoon after Sky fired her
Becky Hammon has been very vocal about the hottest topics in the WNBA. Speaking on the Chicago Sky firing Teresa Weatherspoon after only one season coaching them, Hammon disapproved of the decision, saying it didn't make sense from her point of view.
"I mean, I don't know how you make that make sense. It doesn't make much sense to me," Hammon said.
"I thought they overplayed their roster, meaning I thought they were in a rebuild. Trade away all your pieces. I don't know what you expected out of that roster. I thought she got the most out of that roster," she added.
Meanwhile, Becky Hammon is trying to make history this season and win a third consecutive WNBA championship, but first she needs to move past the strong New York Liberty.
