"She plays both sides": Fans slam WNBA legend Sue Bird for seemingly disingenuous stance on Caitlin Clark
Fans have accused WNBA legend Sue Bird of taking a double stance on Caitlin Clark's impact. A fan called out Bird on X, formerly Twitter, for praising the Indiana Fever star on her podcast but seemingly taking the opposite stance on a television platform with a bigger audience.
Their post gained over 21K views, with people sharing similar opinions.
"Sue B*rd only gives her so called daughter flowers on her podcast with her wife but whenever she goes on big tv shows she’ll say the WNBA was already growing big and 22 just happened to tip the cup over. She plays both sides," the post read.
One fan highlighted that the WNBA took a hit during the COVID-19 pandemic and it was not before Caitlin Clark that it gained prominence, similar to the pre-COVID era.
Other fans followed suit and expressed their opinions.
"Everything was “growing” in terms of being compared to 2020 Covid baseline numbers," another fan tweeted.
"I never liked Sue Bird. She just uses Clark’s name on Podcast for clicks," another fan tweeted.
One fan claimed that Bird was a University of Connecticut alum, which influenced her opinions.
"Yea at the end of the day, people like Bird fall back to their default programming. Bird is part of the UConn Mafia. You can never leave that family. Wouldn't be surprised if she got flack by other fellow alum as to how bad praising Clark is. Bird got back w/the program," the fan tweeted.
"Uconn mafia bro...." another fan tweeted.
Bird has been an avid spokesperson for UConn star Paige Bueckers but has praised Clark several times.
Sue Bird praises Caitlin Clark for her impact on the WNBA
On the Dec. 11 episode of the "A Touch More" podcast, Sue Bird sat down with her partner Megan Rapione to discuss Caitlin Clark ranking 10th on Sportrico's most-paid athlete's list, the WNBA expansion and other topics. During one segment, Bird praised Clark for her impact on the league.
"For a league to be successful … have longevity and now to see for a player in a league to be able to garner money off the court. In this way, some of it is just because it’s Caitlin Clark," Bird said.
"Like you can’t remove that from the equation. She’s also a little bit of a catalyst because now that you’re seeing brands invest in her, they know that she’s going to be seen in the WNBA. And so those brands are now also going to invest in the WNBA."

Bird ended her praise highlighting that Caitlin Clark's success would impact the other players in the league in the long run as salaries go up and new investments come into the league.
