“She would’ve got more love on the Big 3”- Dwight Howard opposes Caitlin Clark snub from Olympics roster
Team USA's roster for women's basketball includes prominent names in the WNBA except for 2024 top pick Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever. The former Iowa Hawkeye's exclusion from the list set the internet on fire, earning mixed opinions, including from three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Dwight Howard.
According to Howard, Clark should have been included in the Paris Olympic squad. The eight-time NBA All-Star also took a jab that the 'Big 3' would appreciate Clark's presence more than the WNBA.
"Man yall better put Caitlyn on the Olympic team … she would’ve got more love on the Big 3," posts Howard on X.
Among the other WNBA stars included in the 2024 roster were A'Ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Diana Taurasi, Kelsey Plum, Sabrina Ionescu and Brittney Griner.
Dwight Howard himself got to represent Team USA during his prime, winning a gold medal in the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He was part of the 'Redeem Team' alongside the late Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul and Chris Bosh.
Caitlin Clark's Olympic dream will have to wait
Caitlin Clark's quick climb to prominence has drawn more attention to women's basketball than ever before. However, her popularity did not guarantee her a spot on the 2024 Team USA squad for the Paris Olympics.
Many would have loved to see Clark be part of Team USA but that has to wait. Nonetheless, being part of the national team was a dream for the Indiana Fever rookie.
"That’s one of my dreams as a kid. Growing up, you always want to be an Olympic gold medalist," said Clark to TODAY. "Lucky enough, I’ve been able to play for a few junior national teams in their basketball system, so I know how special it is to represent USA across your chest."
Caitlin Clark has already represented Team USA three times. The first was during the U-16 FIBA Americas Championships and twice during the 2019 and 2021 FIBA U-19 World Cup. All her stints with the national team ended with gold medal finishes.
