WNBA Expansion Alert: Patrick and Brittany Mahomes in talks to bring franchise to Kansas City

One of the most powerful couples in the world of sports, Patrick and Brittany Mahomes, are reportedly in talks to bring a new franchise to the growing WNBA. After a historical 2024 season, the W is trying to get bigger and adding more franchises appears to be a must.

The Golden State Valkyries are set to debut next season and after 2025, Portland and Toronto will get new teams.

In addition to this, news has emerged that the Mahomes couple met with WNBA representatives to try to bring an expansion franchise to Kansas City. The source of this news is NFL insider Adam Schefter.

"As WNBA expansion continues, ownership of the NWSL's KC Current — which includes Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany — has met with the WNBA and is in contention to bring the league's next franchise to Kansas City. Mahomes also co-owns the KC Royals and Sporting KC."

Patrick and Brittany Mahomes have experience in being part owners of different franchises, especially in Kansas City. They are owners of the Kansas City Current of the NSWL, the Sporting KC of the MLS and the Kansas City Royals of the MLB.

The WNBA will have 13 teams next season and 15 in 2026. To help the Mahomes' case, Kansas City Sports Commission president Kathy Nelson and KC Mayor Quinton Lucas insisted that professional basketball should return to the city.

“We think Kansas City is an amazing opportunity for the league to consider,” Nelson said.

Cathy Engelbert mentioned cities that could get a WNBA expansion team before Patrick and Brittany Mahomes joined the mix

The WNBA has grown in recent years and after seeing Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and other players from the 2024 Draft class make a lot of noise, they are set to get more eyes.

Expansion teams don't seem as far as they do in the NBA and WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert named several cities that could get a team next. Philadelphia, Toronto, Portland, Denver and Nashville are in the mix to get a team.

"It's complex because you need the arena and practice facility and player housing and all the things you need, committed long-term ownership groups," Engelbert said before the 2024 WNBA Draft. "And so, the nice thing is we're getting a lot of calls, we're continuing to engage with cities."

Bringing two celebrities like Patrick and Brittany Mahomes would draw even more attention to the WNBA, especially to a passionate city like KC.
