"You have a future" - Phillies announcer tries recruiting Caitlin Clark for MLB broadcast following Fever rookie's viral clip
The Philadelphia Phillies' television play-by-play announcer has extended an invitation to Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark to try her hand in the commentary booth. This comes after a TikTok video of Clark calling a game between the Phillies and the Milwaukee Brewers game went viral.
The TikTok, posted by Caitlin Clark's teammate Lexie Hull, has amassed over 552,000 views as of now. In the clip, Clark delivers commentary with a mix of humor and sarcasm but still comes across as a natural.
In a stitched version of the video, Phillies announcer Tom McCarthy invited Caitlin Clark to join the booth, telling her she’s welcome whenever she has free time.
“Great job the other day with that description, got to the hole, threw it comfortably over to first. You have a future,” McCarthy said. “And by the way, any down time you have, you’re up in the booth whenever you want. And bring Connor, too."
Clark has said Connor McCaffery, her boyfriend, is a fan of the Phillies. Though she is not a diehard for any team, she said she roots for the Cubs and the Yankees.
Caitlin Clark is gearing up for her first postseason as a WNBA player, as the Fever face the Connecticut Sun in a best-of-three series starting with Game 1 on Sept. 22.
The Fever finished the regular season with a 20-20 record, a significant improvement from last year’s 13-27 result.
Earlier in the season, the Fever lost their first three matchups against the Sun during a tough 3-10 stretch, with defeats by 21, four and 17 points. However, they rebounded strongly, winning 17 of their final 27 games, including an 84-80 victory over the Sun on Aug. 28.
Caitlin Clark discusses viral commentating clip
Earlier, Caitlin Clark shared that she often commentates on games during her downtime and wanted to show that to Hull, which led to the viral video. However, she said she didn’t realize the camera was rolling until partway through.
“I really didn’t know she was recording until a little bit of the way through,” Clark said (per Matthew Byrne). "It was pretty funny, I messed up a few times, but that’s a hard gig! Also, I was out of breath and exhausted, so shoutout to all the commentators out there.”
Caitlin Clark also mentioned she’d be open to trying commentating if the opportunity arose.
“I did it for two minutes and I needed a break...I don't know if commentating's in my future, but who knows, maybe one time for fun, someone will let me do it."
The WNBA playoffs could run as late as Sunday, Oct. 20, with Game 5 of the finals scheduled for that date.
Meanwhile, the MLB postseason begins Oct. 1, with a potential Game 7 of the World Series slated for either Oct. 30 or Nov. 2.
