"We knew they had heavy hitters"- DRX's MaKo after their win against KRÜ Esports at Valorant Champions 2024 (Exclusive)
Valorant Champions 2024 is the final international tier-one event of this season. A total of sixteen teams from the four franchise leagues will be playing against each other in Seoul, South Korea for the crown of world champion. This event will follow a standard double-elimination format with a Group Stage and Playoffs.
Day 2 opened with an exciting matchup between Pacific's DRX and Americas' KRÜ Esports. Both these teams were able to dominate the other on their opponents' map picks. However, it was DRX that eventually ran away with the series by a win 2-1 as they continued to dominate on the decider map, Bind.
In the post-match conference, Sportskeeda Esports got the chance to talk to DRX's in-game leader (IGL), MaKo during which he said:
"We knew they had heavy hitters."
DRX's MaKo talks about their win against KRÜ Esports after a bad start in the series at Valorant Champions 2024
DRX has always been one of the best teams to come out of the Pacific region. That said, 2024 has seen them struggle quite a bit. The team ended up just barely missing out on both Masters Madrid and Masters Shanghai. However, Stage 2 saw them finally living up to everyone's expectations as they finished in second place and qualified for Valorant Champions 2024.
In their first match of Valorant Champions 2024 against KRÜ Esports, DRX had a very slow start. On their own map pick, Haven, they were unable to stop KRÜ from winning rounds which ended the map at a 13-2 scoreline. However, DRX was able to pick themselves back up and finish the next two maps in a 13-6 fashion, outclassing KRÜ at every point.
Sportskeeda Esports approached DRX's MaKo to ask him about how it was for him as the team's leader to rally his squad back after a one-sided map loss and direct them toward the series win. Here's what he said:
"Overall I just felt like we can definitely win the series if we played a clean game without mistakes. After Haven we were just like ok it's only the first map. We knew they had heavy hitters on the team and we knew they were a good team. Fortunately it was a quick loss, didn't take much for us to mentally recover because of how much gap there was with the scoreline. Also going into the second map and third map we just said you know what let's just pop their heads, let's shoot back and we can win this."
With this win, DRX will be heading into the upper bracket of the Group Stage at Valorant Champions 2024. Their next match will be against Fnatic where they will play for the Playoffs spot.
