First South Asian Invitational Men’s Volleyball Championship: Maldives and Sri Lanka win

Glimpse of the match between Nepal and Sri Lanka

Maldives and Sri Lanka won their respective matches on the second day of the ongoing First South Asian Invitational Men’s Volleyball Championship at Kathmandu, Nepal.

Sri Lanka defeated the hosts Nepal in three straight set to qualify for the final of the championship. On the first day of the championship, Sri Lanka had defeated Maldives. Sri Lanka defeated Nepal 25-17, 25-16, 25-16 in three straight sets. Nepal has never earned victory over Sri Lanka since the 1987 Kolkata South Asian Games (SAG). Earlier on the first day, Nepal had defeated Afghanistan 3-2. The previous meeting between Nepal and Afghanistan was in the 2004 Islamabad SAG.

In the other match of the day, Maldives defeated Afghanistan 3-1. Maldives took the first and second set 25-12, 26-24 while lost the third set 22-25 and took the fourth set 25-19. Maldives are now in second position in the table with three points.

The results on the second day meant that Sri Lanka are in final of the championship with Afghanistan crashing out. The winner of the match between Maldives and Nepal in their last round-robin match will qualify for the final to face Sri Lanka.

Nepal Volleyball Association (NVA) are the organisers of  the First South Asian Invitational Men’s Volleyball Championship, which has been held from 12 to 15 July 2013 at Kathmandu, Nepal. National teams from four South Asian countries – Afghanistan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka – are participating in the first edition of the championship.

The championship is being played in the round-robin format. The top two teams in the standings will enter the final of the championship. The championship is being played at the National Sports Council covered hall at Kathmandu, Nepal.
