Asian Games 2014: Indian men win, women lose in volleyball
Incheon, Sep 24 (IANS) Indian men's volleyball team registered a 3-0 win over Maldives in its preliminary Group C match while the women's team suffered a 0-3 loss against Thailand in its preliminary Group A match of the Asian Games at the Songnim Gymnasium here Wednesday.
The men's team, which defeated Hong Kong Saturday, won in straight sets 25-10, 25-19, 25-17 in 60 minutes. Spiker Gurinder Singh contributed 13 points while Jacob Manidurai became India's second best scorer with 10 points. Navneet Katariya supported the duo brilliantly by scoring nine points.
The men's team next plays Iran Friday. India are now on top of the Group C standing with six points.
However, Indian women failed to impress against Thailand, losing 19-25, 12-25, 11-25. The Indian team fought hard but ran out of steam. Raju Tiji was India's highest scorer with 10 points as her team failed to contain Thai girl Wilavan Apinyapong, who was the top scorer of the match with 14 points.
