Lusofonia Games 2014: Indian men and women win gold in volleyball

The Indian men’s team claimed gold in the volleyball event on Tuesday at the ongoing Lusofonia Games in Goa.

The Indian team, led by Rama Dhawaskar, trounced Macau 25-15, 25-13, 25-16 at Dr Shama Prasad Mukherjee stadium to clinch the gold medal.

Prabhagaran, Lalit Kumar, Navjit Singh, and Aaron Pereira were the star performers for India as Macau were left helpless. Skipper Dhawaskar, who was introduced in the game during the second set along with Navjit Singh, displayed brilliant offensive play with some powerful smashes to which the Macau defence had no answer.

Macau, who sported a black jersey for the match against India, looked weak from the outset and failed to threaten the rampant Indian team at any stage in the match.

Earlier in the day, Indian women’s volleyball team also bagged gold by outclassing Mozambique.

Apart from Goa (India), other participants in volleyball event were Macau (China) and Mozambique.
