Bhavika Patel’s brave run at U23 World Wrestling Championships ends in narrow bronze medal defeat
Bhavika Patel, India's first female wrestler to participate in the U23 World Wrestling Championships, showcased a commendable effort in her maiden appearance. Despite her best efforts, the young wrestler missed out on securing a bronze medal in the women's 55kg category.
Bhavika, who hails from Ahmedabad, began her journey at the U23 World Wrestling Championships with a solid 9-6 victory over Canada's Victoria Joie Seal in the qualification round. However, she faced a setback in the pre-quarterfinals, where she was overpowered by Mexico's Zeltzin Hernandez Guerra, losing 1-11 by technical superiority.
Bhavika Patel's path to the podium reignited with Hernandez advanced to the final, giving the Indian wrestler another chance through the repechage round. She seized the opportunity, and displayed her resilience in the repechage round with a dominant 10-0 win over Kyrgyzstan's Aruuke Kadyrbek Kyzy, securing the victory by technical superiority and advancing to the bronze medal match.
However, in a closely fought bronze medal bout, Bhavika Patel fell short, losing 5-2 to USA's Amani Jones, thus narrowly missing out on the bronze and a podium finish.

Bhavika Patel's wrestling journey
Bhavika's journey to international competitions talks about her dedication and talent. Before her U23 World Championship appearance, she won a bronze medal at the National Games in 2023 in Goa.
She has also won four school-level medals, including one silver and three bronze, a silver medal at the Khelo India Games. Bhavika also secured three national-level medals in senior competitions, comprising two silvers and a bronze. In junior categories, she won two bronze medals and a silver medal in the Under-23 nationals.
Coming from a modest background, Bhavika has made her way up, having fought many odds in her career. Her determination led her to compete in major competitions like the Commonwealth Championship and the U-23 World Championships, despite having missed out on a spot at the Asian U23 Championships after a close loss in the trials.
