U17 World Wrestling Championships: Ronak Dahiya settles for bronze medal; Anuj moves to the repechage

Ronak Dahiya, the 110 kg Greco-Roman wrestler, secured the bronze medal in the ongoing U17 World Wrestling Championships in Jordan, Amman on Monday, August 19. On the other hand, Anuj, the 65 kg Greco-Roman wrestler, moved to the repechage round.

Moving into the details, Ronak started his Round of 16 bout, defeating Artur Manvelian 8-1. Later in the quarterfinals, he secured a technical superiority win over Daniil Maslakou by a 10-1 margin. He suffered a defeat against Hungary's Czako Zoltan by a 0-2 margin in the semifinals to settle for the bronze medal

Ronak, who trains at Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi, was the lone Indian wrestler to secure a medal on Day 1 of the U17 World Wrestling Championships.


Anuj moves to the repechage round in the U17 World Wrestling Championships

In the 65 kg weight category, Anuj lost to Ukraine's Vladyslav Pokotylo by 1-10 in the Round of 16. However, with Pokotylo moving to the final, Anuj will stand a chance to try his luck in the repechage round on Tuesday, August 20.

However, other wrestlers couldn’t make an impact on Day 1 of the U17 World Wrestling Championships. In the 48 kg weight category, Bikash Kachhap suffered a loss to Nikolai Kristov by 1-11 to exit the competition.

In the 55 kg weight category, Samarth Gajanan suffered a loss to Yurik from Armenia by 0-8 in the Round of 16 bout to suffer elimination. Unfortunately, his repechage chances also got washed out.

Shifting to the 80 kg category, Nishant Phogat showed good signs in the qualification round, winning over Mohamed Abadi by 7-1. However, he suffered a defeat to Nichita Apostol in the Round of 16 to bow out of the campaign.

On Tuesday, a few more Indian wrestlers will take part in the competition in the 45 kg, 51 kg, 60 kg, 71 kg and 92 kg weight categories. Kedar Ashok Kamble (45 kg), Sainath Pardhi (51 kg), Gaurav (60 kg), Sachin Kumar (71 kg), and Lucky (92 kg) are the other participants in Greco-Roman.

Furthermore, Indian wrestlers will take part in the men’s freestyle and women’s wrestling events later in the competition.
