3 Reasons why Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther should headline WWE Crown Jewel over The Bloodline match
WWE's next Premium Live Event is Crown Jewel 2024. The big-time show is taking place this Saturday, and it will air live from Saudi Arabia. This is common, as World Wrestling Entertainment generally hosts two premium live events in the country each year.
The card for this edition of Crown Jewel is absolutely stacked. Seven matches have been booked, which include a Bloodline Six-Man Tag Team Match, Liv Morgan vs. Nia Jax, Seth Rollins vs. Bronson Reed, and Randy Orton vs. Kevin Owens.
Arguably, the most intriguing match of the night will be Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther. Both men are world champions in their respective brands, and they will clash to determine the first-ever Crown Jewel Champion. This is a big match.
Given how big the bout is, many believe Cody vs. Gunther should headline the show. However, others think The Bloodline match will be the main event. This article will look at a handful of reasons why The American Nightmare vs. The Ring General should be the last match at Crown Jewel.
Below are three reasons why Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther should headline WWE Crown Jewel over The Bloodline match.
#3. The Bloodline already main evented at Bad Blood
The Bloodline saga has long been the biggest and best angle in WWE. It has roots dating back decades, but it truly took off beginning in 2020. Over the next four years, it has become the most successful storyline in modern wrestling, and, financially, it has arguably been the most successful ever.
While The Bloodline angle is the biggest in WWE, if it always headlines every show, it will become stale. Even the best acts can't be overexposed or overdone. Part of the reason why The Bloodline saga has been so successful is thanks to Roman Reigns' part-time schedule, which makes each appearance special.
Bad Blood was the previous PLE and it was at that show where The Bloodline main evented. Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes united to take on Jacob Fatu and Solo Sikoa, but the bout and post-match antics also featured other Bloodline stars such as Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa, Jimmy Uso, and The Rock.
To avoid anything getting stale, alternating when The Bloodline main events is best for business. They just headlined Bad Blood and will likely do so again at Survivor Series. For now, let Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther take the top spot.
#2. Cody Rhodes can't keep playing second fiddle to Roman Reigns
Cody Rhodes finished the story at WrestleMania 41. After years, The American Nightmare finally defeated Roman Reigns and became the Undisputed WWE Champion.
After 'Mania, Roman Reigns took time away from WWE. This then allowed Cody Rhodes to be the top guy in the company. He headlined the premium live events, and he was the top draw. Then Roman Reigns came back at SummerSlam.
Now, the two are fighting to determine who is truly the top dog in the company. World Wrestling Entertainment and Triple H are trying to juggle both, and so far, it has been working. With that being said, the balancing act applies to main events, and Crown Jewel could make or break the role of Cody Rhodes as a 1A and Roman Reigns as a top dog.
If Cody ends up in the middle of the show or even opens up the card, it would immediately make The Bloodline story, and by proxy, Roman Reigns, a bigger deal.
That will make Rhodes at best 1B to Roman, but realistically, it will probably instead make him the number two star. If Triple H wants them even, Cody has to headline. Roman is a made man, and Cody is still adjusting.
#1. The WWE Championship and World Heavyweight Championship should headline, especially with this new concept
The final reason why Roman Reigns' Bloodline match shouldn't headline over Gunther vs. Cody Rhodes has little to do with the stars involved. Instead, it has to do with the WWE championships tied to one of the matches.
Gunther is the World Heavyweight Champion representing Monday Night RAW. Meanwhile, Cody Rhodes is the Undisputed WWE Champion, and he represents Friday Night SmackDown. These titles are meant to be the focal point of each brand, specifically for the men's side of things.
If The Bloodline saga headlines Crown Jewel over a clash between the two world champions, it means that Roman Reigns and the ongoing storyline he is involved in means more than both world titles.
Whether true or not, this isn't what the company wants to tell the viewer. This move would devalue both titles and hurt their importance moving forward. In turn, this could hurt WWE's chances of making money from a world title feud on either show down the line.
