3 ways WWE surprised us at SummerSlam

SummerSlam was a good show

The second biggest pay-per-view of the year took place at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario. It was a sold out arena and the fans were not disappointed after an impressive show. Some big names competed in Toronto and a title changed hands.

After adding two new matches to the kick-off show, a total of twelve matches took place at the Biggest Party of the Summer. Except for the Intercontinental Championship, every singles title was on the line at the Scotiabank Arena. Surprisingly, the Tag Team Titles of RAW and SmackDown Live were not defended at SummerSlam, but the Women's Tag Team Titles were on the line.

While several gigantic names were part of the show, some notable names missed the show. Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman and Drew McIntyre skipped SummerSlam this year. Additionally, The Undertaker fought at Extreme Rules, but he missed SummerSlam this year.

We witnessed unforeseen surprises at SummerSlam this year. Let's check three ways WWE surprised us in Toronto.

#3 Kevin Owens went low to defeat Shane McMahon

In recent weeks, Kevin Owens has become a prominent name on SmackDown Live. The former Universal Champion had a match at SummerSlam where he faced Shane McMahon. As a matter of fact, the Prize Fighter put his WWE career on the line in Toronto. Since Shane defeated Roman Reigns just two months ago, he was not a cakewalk for Owens.

Being a heel, Shane brought Elias as his back-up. The Drifter caused major obstacles for Owens but the latter managed to overcome every hurdle. Though Owens pinned Shane McMahon, he went low to earn the victory.

Considering Owens is currently a babyface, it was surprising to see him deliver a low blow to pick up a win. Nevertheless, he managed to save his career in WWE. The rivalry between Owens and Shane has been exciting and it will be interesting to see if they renew the rivalry after SummerSlam.
