4 Reasons why WWE chose Chelsea Green as the first-ever Women's United States Champion

After a few weeks of a tournament to crown a new titleholder, WWE chose Chelsea Green as the inaugural Women's United States Champion. Green outlasted Bayley, Naomi, Bianca Belair, Tiffany Stratton, Michin, and others to capture the newly-introduced Championship. While many stars were worthy of the honor, WWE ultimately selected Green for the historic moment.

With her big win at Saturday Night's Main Event, Green will enter 2025 as a bigger star than in 2024. WWE picked her to win the inaugural title for the next four reasons.

#4. Connection with the WWE Universe

One reason WWE chose Chelsea Green to become the first Women’s United States Champion is because of her connection with the crowd.

Despite being a heel, her outlandish nature and attention to detail have been appreciated by fans for the last several months. Her relationship with Nick Aldis is also good for comic relief on SmackDown.

Even though she was supposed to be the heel, Green was cheered in both her semifinal match against Bayley and again against Michin in the tournament's finals. Had Michin or Elektra Lopez won, the crowd reaction may have been flatter.

#3. Continuing her relationship with Nick Aldis

Another reason Green could have been selected to win the Women’s United States Championship is to continue her tenuous relationship with SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis.

She consistently complained to Aldis and wanted preferential treatment from him. Since her demands were so outlandish, he usually rebuked her.

Now that she’s one of his Champions, he may have to listen more to her. That could open things up for some funny segments down the road on SmackDown.

#2. Chelsea Green does the little things to make a character work

Chelsea Green has shown amazing attention to detail throughout her two stints in WWE. She puts over anyone who needs it and does everything she is asked to do. Who wants to get stuffed inside a dumpster?

Her work in the 2024 Royal Rumble was hilarious, as she bounced from corner to corner despite trying to avoid action. Her grating character reflects a spoiled person who always wants to speak with a manager.

In an age where most female characters are extensions of personality traits - being the best, being the most attractive, no one can beat me - her character work sticks out.

#1. A heel turn from Piper Niven could turn her face

Piper Niven hoisted her friend and tag team partner on her shoulders after she won the title. While the fans were cheering, it felt like there was a chance that Niven could have turned on her Green in that moment.

Both women were in the same tournament, and Niven may have felt that The Hot Mess used her to get ahead. That may have been true in the earlier stages of their alliance, but it has changed. Niven may be jealous that she didn’t advance as far as Green.

If the imposing star turned on her supposed friend, it would immediately cement the inaugural champion as a fan favorite. That act would make WWE's internal listings match the fans' reaction to Chelsea Green.
