4 WWE Money in the Bank mistakes that should not be repeated in 2024
The 15th edition of the WWE Money in the Bank Premium Live Event will take place in Toronto, Canada, on July 6. The PLE will feature Ladder Matches for the Men's and Women's MITB briefcases.
The briefcase holds a guaranteed title opportunity, and the exciting match and stakes attached to it make these gimmick matches an instant hit.
While the concept is special, WWE management hasn't always utilized it correctly. This is primarily due to Vince McMahon, but even the Triple H-led regime has made some mistakes in recent years.
Below are four past Money in the Bank mistakes that WWE should not repeat this year:
#4. Triple H needs to avoid booking a same-night cash-in
As noted, the winner of the Money in the Bank Ladder Match receives a special prize. The MITB contract offers a guaranteed shot at the World Title within 365 days of winning the briefcase.
This means that, provided a referee is available and the champion is in the ring, a wrestler can cash in at any time. A common trope has been a WWE star winning the Money in the Bank briefcase and then cashing in later that night. The likes of Kane, Dean Ambrose, Alexa Bliss, Bayley, and Liv Morgan have all done this in the past.
Frankly, the trope has become stale. It has been done to death and shouldn't happen again for a long time. Hence, Triple H must resist the temptation to replicate it this weekend.
#3. The Money in the Bank winners shouldn't go on to lose constantly before cashing in
Another trend during the Vince McMahon-led regime was that the MITB briefcase holder would embark on a losing spree. The likes of Dolph Ziggler and Baron Corbin suffered the same fate.
Constant defeats after winning the MITB contract not only dent the talent's momentum, but the briefcase's prestige also takes a beating.
Last year, Triple H faced criticism after the-then Mr. Money in the Bank, Damian Priest, failed multiple times to cash in his contract. The Archer of Infamy eventually cashed in his contract on Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania XL.
It would be wise for The Game to avoid replicating this formula with the 2024 winners. While they don't necessarily need to embark on a winning streak, the winners should not lose their momentum due to poor booking.
#2. WWE shouldn't have the winners tease cash in attempts too often
Part of the fun with a superstar not immediately cashing in their Money in the Bank briefcase comes with their ability to tease doing so.
Mr. Kennedy, for example, teased cashing in his briefcase often. Carmella did the same. Damian Priest is one of the best recent examples of the same. Unfortunately, it could be argued that The Judgment Day member teased it too often. WWE went to the well too many times.
Austin Theory is likely the most egregious example of this, however. The SmackDown Superstar tried and failed to cash in numerous times, to the point where it became tiresome. Triple H and company officials must avoid overdoing this before a fun aspect of the gimmick becomes stale.
#1. At least one of the briefcase holders should have an honorable cash-in
As noted above, the MITB briefcase holder earns a shot at the World Title at the time of their choosing within the next 365 days. WWE Hall of Famer Edge was the first to take advantage of this, as he successfully cashed in his MITB contract on a battered John Cena, who had just been through an Elimination Chamber Match at New Year's Revolution 2006.
Fast forward to 2024, and almost everyone who has won a Money in the Bank briefcase cashed in when their opponent was vulnerable. This includes both babyfaces and heels.
Triple H and WWE need to have more honorable cash-ins, and one of the two Money in the Bank briefcase holders this year should announce their intention to cash in ahead of time. A babyface such as Andrade or Jey Uso may be the perfect choice to do this, as it would fit their characters.
