4 WWE Superstars who are next in line for Gunther's World Heavyweight Championship
The return of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship is one of the most significant changes Triple H has made since taking over as creative head. The redesigned title has become one of the top championships in the industry and is currently around the waist of The Ring General, Gunther.
The Austrian star defeated Damian Priest at SummerSlam 2024 to capture the World Heavyweight Championship. Since winning the title, Gunther has proved he is a worthy champ. With that said, there are many stars chomping at the bit to get a shot at Gunther's title.
This is our list of four WWE Superstars who could be next in line for Gunther's World Heavyweight Championship:
#4. Former NXT North American Champion Dominik Mysterio
When Dominik Mysterio started his wrestling career under the tutelage of his father, Rey Mysterio, he was one of the most likable stars on the roster. Dom appeared to have inherited his father's gift of being revered by the WWE Universe as a babyface. But things changed when he turned on Rey and started his new journey as one of the most hated heels in the entire world.
Despite being a main roster superstar for only a couple of years, Dominik Mysterio has a history with WWE dating back to his childhood when his father and Eddie Guerrero battled for his custody in a Ladder Match. Dom has proved he has the tools needed to be a top star. It's time to elevate him to the next level, which could start with a shot at Gunther's World Heavyweight Championship.
#3. Former World Heavyweight Champion Damian Priest
Since leaving The Judgment Day, Damian Priest has reinvented himself as one of the top contenders for the title he once carried. The Archer of Infamy has been gaining momentum week after week and has been a problem for anyone who gets in his way.
Damian Priest worked his way up the NXT ladder, becoming a one-time North American Champion before making his main roster debut at the 2021 Royal Rumble. After joining The Judgment Day, Priest's career went on an upward trajectory as he won the 2023 Men's MITB briefcase and had a successful cash-in at WrestleMania XL, where he defeated Drew McIntyre to win the World Heavyweight Title.
Damian carried the belt for over 100 days before dropping it to Gunther at SummerSlam, thanks to betrayal from Finn Balor. The former champion had a confrontation with The Ring General this past Monday. A follow-up feud with Gunther would be great for Damian, as well as the WWE Universe.
#2. 16-time WWE World Champion John Cena
When wrestling fans are hanging around the water cooler, having small talk about who is on their pro wrestling Mount Rushmore, John Cena is usually included in this conversation. During his legendary career, The Franchise Player has made a huge impact both in and out of the ring.
Fans were shocked when Cena returned to WWE TV at Money in the Bank and announced his Retirement Tour. John informed the world that he would begin his in-ring 12-month Farewell Tour in January 2025. With 16 World titles to his credit, a 17th reign would separate The Greatest of All Time from the pack, cementing his legacy as one of the true greats of all time.
#1. Former Intercontinental Champion Main Event Jey Uso
Just days removed from losing the Intercontinental Title, Jey Uso finds himself at a crossroads. His brother, Jimmy, has returned, which opens up another potential angle. The YEET Master's title run may have been short-lived, but it was impactful.
Before capturing the Intercontinental Championship, Main Event Jey Uso made a name for himself as one of the greatest tag team performers in history. The Triple H-led creative team decided to take a chance on the tag team specialist, throwing him into singles competition. That turned out to be a great creative decision, as he became one of the most popular stars in the world. WWE needs to strike while the iron is hot. He has the capability of being an elite World Heavyweight Champion.
