4 WWE Tag Teams who are on the brink of breaking up
Tag team wrestling has had many ups and downs in WWE. Vince McMahon, the former head of creative for the sports entertainment juggernaut, was reportedly not a big fan of tag teams and thus often moved away from them.
Sure, there were highs. The late 80s and the Attitude Era featured a lot of great tandems. More often than not, teams were put together just for the sake of breaking up in the hopes of one becoming a breakout singles star.
Recently, tag team wrestling has seemingly begun to pick up again. RAW, SmackDown, and NXT have had incredible tag team matches on television lately. Despite that, many teams are seemingly on the verge of ending.
This article will take a look at four teams that are on the brink of breaking up. These include duos from RAW, SmackDown, and NXT, as well as a current set of champions who have had issues on and off for months.
Below are four WWE tag teams that are on the brink of breaking up.
#4. A-Town Down Under splitting feels inevitable
A-Town Down Under is a tag team comprised of Austin Theory and Grayson Waller. The two cocky stars are currently members of the Friday Night SmackDown brand, where they held tag team gold together earlier this year.
Outside of being a former WWE Tag Team Champion, Austin Theory has had singles success too. He is a former United States Champion and even won the Men's Money in the Bank briefcase, although he failed to cash it in successfully.
Theory and Waller have had issues for quite a while now. Often, Grayson seemingly sets Austin up and leaves him to fend for himself. It took a long time, but the former United States Champion has finally woken up to it. The pair might break up soon; it could be a matter of time before Austin grows tired of being used by the Australian.
#3. Fraxiom regularly has issues
Fraxiom is an incredibly talented tag team in WWE. Many believe they are the best tag team in the world. Given their incredible two reigns as the NXT Tag Team Champions, it is easy to see why. In addition, they put on amazing matches.
The duo of Axiom and Nathan Frazer both broke out on the European indie scene and later NXT UK. Both talented stars are former Heritage Cup winners and, as noted, have held and currently hold the WWE NXT Tag Team Title.
Despite being the champions, the two stars routinely argue. Fans regularly compare Nathan to his trainer and mentor Seth Rollins, expecting him to betray Axiom just like Seth did when he was a part of The Shield. Whether that happens remains to be seen, but with how much they argue, it feels inevitable.
#2. DIY might break up after last week's episode of SmackDown
DIY is one of the biggest success stories in WWE. Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa have managed to hold tag team gold on NXT, but once they reunited on the main roster, the pair also held the WWE Tag Team Title on SmackDown.
Their success doesn't just extend to tag team runs; both Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano are former NXT Champions. On top of that, Gargano also held the NXT North American Championship.
They notably broke up multiple times and had one of the most intense and epic feuds in NXT history. Now the two may soon clash again. Johnny accidentally nailed Tommaso with a Superkick when battling Motor City Machine Guns. Given Ciampa's fiery temper and past actions, this could be bad news for the future of DIY.
#1. The New Day's breakup feels inevitable
The New Day is one of the greatest stables in WWE history. The group was first formed about a decade ago and featured Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, and Big E as members. They have since gone on to win numerous tag team titles.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck the group in 2022. During an episode of SmackDown, former WWE Champion Big E landed on his head and neck when taking an Overhead Belly-to-Belly Suplex on the floor. He sustained a serious neck injury and has never returned to action.
Nowadays, Kofi and Xavier have been at each other's throats. Woods has had a bad attitude lately, fueled by frustrations over never winning a singles title and a lack of recent success for The New Day. The two splitting up feels inevitable, which will be heartbreaking for fans, as the group had remained solid for all of these many years.
