5 WWE tag teams that desperately need a makeover

Wrestlers like Goldust could be in for a makeover with his tag team partner, R-Truth

I grew up watching tag teams that meant something to professional wrestling. Teammates that could cut a promo just as well as they could perform in the ring. Listening to the likes of Ole and Gene Anderson, Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood and The Fabulous Freebirds, they were captivating and worth the price of admission.

Today’s tag teams are more style over substance, more flash than finish. And if given the chance to compete in decades past, they would all fail miserably.

Originally, the premise of tag team wrestling was to give more performers a chance to appear on television and at live events. During the 1980s boom of the business, tag teams were a major part of productions. For much of the last few years, the tag team scene in WWE had been as valuable as the ‘divas’ division.

All of that has changed. Teams like The New Day, American Alpha and The Club are as important to the new genetic makeup of both Raw and SmackDown as any part of the company roster. Even with its success, there are still a few teams that could use a change, maybe a new direction.

Here’s a look at five teams that should consider a fresh start to move up the ladder of success:

#1 Rhyno and Heath Slater

Could Rhyno and Heath Slater, SmackDown Tag Team champions, use a different look?

The current Smackdown World Tag Team Champions are about as much of a mismatch as there is on either roster. They say opposites attract. This is the simplest definition. I doubt the combination will be champions much longer with the push Jimmy and Jey Uso are being given.

The feel good story of Slater has gotten as much shelf life as it deserves. It’s time to move on to champions that mean something in a division still trying to catch up to Raw’s tag team roster. Maybe a fresh look is in order for both wrestlers to rise above and remain prevalent in the division once they drop the straps.
