6 superstars with the most Hell in a Cell matchesÂ
Hell in a Cell is one of the most prestigious and intriguing concepts in WWE. Having been around for more than a quarter of a century, the cell has claimed many victims over the years.
More than 50 HIAC matches have occurred on WWE programming, featuring some of pro wrestling's all-time greats. The bulk of these occurred on PLE, or pay-per-views, as they were referred to in the past, including the namesake Hell in a Cell show.
CM Punk and Drew McIntyre will step into the Devil's Playground at Bad Blood. While both men have competed in a few cell matches, their experience pales in comparison to some of the legends mentioned in this list:
#6., #5., & #4. CM Punk, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins have each stepped into Hell in a Cell 5 times
Although CM Punk will surpass them after this weekend, The Best in The World is currently tied with Roman Reigns and Seth "Freakin" Rollins as far as the number of appearances inside the Devil's Playground is concerned. However, Punk's win-loss record needs improvement. Reigns has won four HIAC matches, which is twice the number of victories The Straight Edge Superstar has managed.
The Visionary, on the other hand, has an underwhelming record inside the unforgiving steel structure. Rollins has only won one HIAC match when he defeated Jon Moxley (FKA Dean Ambrose) a decade ago.
It is worth mentioning that one of the cell matches Punk competed in was a dark, untelevised encounter in 2011.
If The Voice of The Voiceless had not left WWE in 2014, he would have surpassed Reigns and Rollins in this regard. Nonetheless, unlike The Visionary and the Original Tribal Chief, Punk will step inside the cell this weekend for the sixth time to settle his score with Drew McIntyre.
#3. Randy Orton has competed in 8 HIAC matches
Randy Orton has been a regular member of the WWE roster for more than two decades. Hence, it isn't a big surprise that The Apex Predator has stepped into the Devil's Playground eight times.
The Viper also has an impressive record, winning five cell matches in eight outings. The 14-time World Champion has had memorable classics inside Hell in a Cell, including a grueling match-of-the-year candidate with The Undertaker at Armageddon 2005 and a couple of hellacious encounters with John Cena.
Orton has also produced some of the most egregious moments inside HIAC. For example, he nearly ripped off Jeff Hardy's ear with a screwdriver in their clash at HIAC 2018.
His last outing occurred in The Thunderdome Era in October 2020, where he defeated Drew McIntyre to win the WWE Championship.
#2. Triple H has the second most appearances and wins inside Hell in a Cell
The Game may have retired unceremoniously in 2022, but he left an indelible footprint in WWE. In his iconic career, The King of Kings stepped inside HIAC nine times and emerged victorious in six instances. The Cerebral Assassin took brutality to another level inside the cell.
At WrestleMania 28, Triple H took The Undertaker to the limit in an all-time classic inside the demonic structure. With Shawn Michaels as Special Guest Referee, the three legends produced a memorable and brutal bout with amazing storytelling.
The former World Heavyweight Champion also retired Cactus Jack in his first-ever Hell in a Cell Match at No Way Out 2000. The bout is remembered for Mick Foley crashing back-first into the ring mat from the top of the cell off a back-body drop.
#1. With 14 appearances, The Undertaker is synonymous with Hell in a Cell
It's impossible to discuss Hell in a Cell without mentioning The Undertaker, the most prolific and accomplished HIAC character. After all, he is The Deadman, and the cell is the Devil's Playground.
The Hall of Famer making his ominous entrance and slamming the cell door shut is a fond memory of every hardcore wrestling fan. Taker competed in 14 Hell in a Cell matches and emerged victorious eight times.
There was something memorable about most of his outings inside the unforgiving structure. In the inaugural Hell in a Cell Match between 'Taker and HBK in 1997, Kane made his shocking debut. The Phenom also tossed Mankind off the top of the cell at King of the Ring 1998.
The Deadman's epic clash with Triple H at WrestleMania 28 has already been discussed. However, his brutal encounter with Edge inside HIAC at SummerSlam 2008 is an underrated gem that had its moments.
Even at the tail end of his career, The Demon of Death Valley still brought his A-game inside the cell, as shown by his decent encounters with Brock Lesnar at HIAC 2015 and Shane McMahon at WrestleMania 32.
