7 New versions of old factions that could be formed with current WWE Superstars
The wrestling landscape is always more interesting when there are numerous factions battling each other. It happened during the Attitude Era with DOA, The Nation of Domination, The Hart Foundation, the Ministry, DX and many more.
NWO ruled WCW in the mid and late 1990s and even that faction broke into two huge groups that battled each other. Kevin Nash broke off and formed the NWO Wolfpac which was the 'cooler, hipper' version of the group. Nash always had to be the coolest.
Today, groups like the Bullet Club, the Elite, the New Day and the Undisputed Era are tearing things up in one form or fashion.
Not all groups are successful, however. While the Nexxus had potential, it was squandered as quickly as they debuted. A group like that shouldn't have simply been stamped out by John Cena.
But nonetheless, there are always ways to improve the WWE product. It's an ongoing cyclical product that sometimes adapts with the changing times, and sometimes it does not.
Since WWE often likes to borrow from its past, here are some suggestions for factions or teams from the past that could be created using current superstars.
Because any four wrestlers in a faction will always be compared/linked to the Four Horsemen, I'm not going to suggest a new version of the historic group.
#7 The Varsity Club
As long as pro wrestling continues to feature wrestlers with legitimate amateur wrestling credentials, there will always be the idea of forming another version of the Varsity Club.
For those who are unaware of this stable, it existed in the mid to late 1980s in NWA and WCW and primarily consisted of Kevin Sullivan, Mike Rotunda (IRS), Rick Steiner and Dr. Death Steve Williams.
Steiner would eventually leave to form the historic tag team the Steiner Brothers with his brother Scott. The main impetus of the group was that each member was a stud amateur wrestler from various colleges.
Rotunda wore a Syracuse jacket, Steiner wore a Michigan jacket and Williams wore one representing Oklahoma. They were primarily heels because they were able to break out several wrestling moves during any given match.
Today's WWE roster is laden with many superstars who have beginnings in amateur wrestling. While Kurt Angle had Team Angle in the early 2000s, he's probably best left out of this suggestion.
With wrestlers like Dolph Ziggler, Chad Gable, Shelton Benjamin and even Bobby Lashley, it wouldn't be hard to envision a stable forming with these superstars. And if Jason Jordan is ever medically cleared, he'd be perfect for this stable as well.
While Bobby Lashley probably wouldn't fit, the rest of the guys would, relying on their technical skill and amateur background to cause havoc. Gable and Ziggler could be the mouthpieces for the group.
It might not be a faction WWE would ever revisit, but they certainly have the pieces in place if they ever need a stable of heel amateur wrestlers. They even teased the formation of such a faction back in NXT with Sawyer Fulton, Tucker Knight, Angelo Dawkins, Jordan and Gable.
