WWE News: Alexa Bliss becomes the longest reigning Raw Women's Champion

What’s the story?

We have a new longest reigning Raw Women's Champion in Alexa Bliss after she surpassed Charlotte Flair's run and achieved the feat by holding the title for 114 days so far.

In case you didn’t know…

Alexa Bliss is currently enjoying her second run as Champion. Her first reign lasted 112 days, just short of Charlotte's 113-day reign after becoming the inaugural Champion.

To date, Charlotte and Alexa are also the only two women to have held both the Raw and SmackDown Women's Championship, with Alexa being the first to achieve this feat.

The heart of the matter

When Alexa Bliss was called up to SmackDown Live during the very first draft of this brand split, no-one could have predicted her success. Having enjoyed most of her success in NXT as a valet for tag team Blake and Murphy, the common consensus seemed to be that Alexa was brought to SmackDown Live to make up the numbers, but far from it.

Since being called up to the main roster, she has been arguably one of the best all-around female performers, being able to cut an incredible heel promo and being very technically sound and a great storyteller in the ring.

Alexa Bliss' reign also puts her in an elite club of three women right now. The three longest reigns of current titles in WWE right now all belong to women. Alexa's run is the shortest of the three, but she is the only one who is still Champion. In second place is Naomi who enjoyed 140 days as SmackDown Champion, and Asuka is top of the list, relinquishing her NXT Women's Championship due to injury after a monumental 510 days as Champion.

Alexa's record-breaking reigns show just how invested in her the WWE seems to be, particularly after her joining the cast of Total Divas at the start of this season too where she actually had almost a full episode dedicated to her getting a pet pig!

What's next?

Well, it'll be interesting to see how long this current reign lasts, as there are some HUGE rumours surrounding the women's division right now. With the announcement of the first-ever women's Royal Rumble match, the aforementioned Asuka remains undefeated and probably on course for a title shot sooner rather than later, the emergence of the Absolution storyline, and the ever-present rumour that UFC fighter Ronda Rousey will sign with WWE.

Author’s take

It's great to see someone like Alexa be awarded for grabbing the brass ring. She really wasn't expected to be one of the main players when she was called up to the main roster, yet has been a standout Superstar, taking the world by storm and proving herself an incredible performer, as well as a great ambassador for the company when speaking with the press and making appearances.

Bliss was even involved in a segment called "Bayley, This Is Your Life" which was deemed to be one of the worst Raw segments in history, yet it didn't stutter her momentum. She has continued to be one of the most entertaining Superstars to watch on a weekly basis and, although her days as Champion may be numbered, you wouldn't bet against her prolonging her current reign, or being a Champion again in the future.
