Big backstage update on Sting at SummerSlam, Why WWE wants him team up with Reigns, more
Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter
There seems to be huge confusion regarding Sting’s appearance at WWE SummerSlam. Despite previous plans to use him in a 6-man tag team match at the PPV, both PWInsider.com and The Wrestling Observer are reporting that plans for Sting to wrestle have been scrapped.
Original PPV plans called for Sting to team with Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose to face The Wyatt Family. The idea was to introduce Sting as a surprise entrant about a week or two before from the event, likely as the mystery third partner in Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose vs. The Wyatt Family.
Sting was told a while back that he would be on the show in a six-man tag match and he was even mentioned in a Summerslam TV commercial that WWE had cut more than a week ago.
Sting since then, was said to have gotten himself into “ridiculously good shape” for a 56-year-old man, but was later told for unknown reasons, that plans had changed and he would not be used on the PPV. There is no word at this time as to how plans for the 6-man tag team match might change, but all the storyline elements of Reigns and Ambrose battling the Wyatts remain in place.
WWE originally had the idea to team Sting up with Reigns because the company felt New York City might be a tough place for Reigns to get a strong babyface reaction from the live crowd.
