Challenges top star, seeks revenge- 4 ways Rey Mysterio can return to WWE
When it's all set and done, Rey Mysterio will go down in history as one of the greatest high-flyers and luchadors to ever step foot in the ring. The masked legend has left an indelible footprint on the business and continues to perform at an elite level even today.
The Hall of Famer was last seen in July 2024, when he was pinned by his son, Dominik Mysterio, in a Mixed Tag Team Match. Considering that he isn't injured, the former World Champion could return to TV at any time.
When he does, Triple H needs to give the legend a legitimate direction and narrative. On that note, let's look at four ways Rey Mysterio can return to WWE.
#4. The Master of the 619 challenges Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship
Gunther is scheduled to defend his newly won World Heavyweight Championship against Randy Orton at Bash in Berlin. The Ring General's reign is in its early stages, and WWE has big plans for his run as champion.
Therefore, he will likely defeat Orton to retain the World Title in Germany. However, Triple H should waste little time in setting up Gunther's next challenger as Rey Mysterio could return to challenge The Ring General.
Mysterio is one of the most recognized names on the roster, and adding his name to Gunther's list of victims would quickly legitimize The Ring General's reign and elevate his aura.
Secondly, Gunther and Mysterio have great chemistry together, as shown by their Intercontinental Title match on SmackDown a few years ago.
#3. Bronson Reed takes out the returning Rey Mysterio
Triple H is on a mission to build Bronson Reed as a monster heel. The Australian star has been on a rampage. On the first RAW after SummerSlam, Reed destroyed Seth "Freakin" Rollins, writing The Visionary off television.
This past week, Awesome Truth, especially R-Truth, suffered the wrath of the former NXT North American Champion. Truth took multiple Tsunami Splashes from Reed, as the former Tag Team Champions were left helpless in the ring.
"Big" Bronson Reed could continue his rampage by taking out Rey Mysterio. The Hall of Famer could return to cut a casual promo, discussing his next move with the WWE Universe.
Reed could then interrupt the legend and lay waste to him. This would build tremendous heel heat, and make the Australian come across as a legitimate top star.
#2. Mysterio could head over to SmackDown to challenge LA Knight
Randy Orton recently jumped ship to RAW to challenge Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship. If Nick Aldis wants to even the score, he can make a fair trade by bringing a star of equal caliber to his roster.
Aldis could recruit Rey Mysterio to the SmackDown roster. The masked legend could make an immediate impact by challenging LA Knight for the US Championship.
After losing the gold to Logan Paul at Crown Jewel 2023, Mysterio never received his rematch. The Hall of Famer could use this as leverage to bargain for a title opportunity.
#1. The Hall of Famer helps Rhea Ripley and Damian Priest fight off The Judgment Day
Dominik Mysterio showed his treacherous tendencies again when he betrayed Rhea Ripley at SummerSlam and confirmed his romantic relationship with Liv Morgan. On the same night, Damian Priest suffered a major betrayal as Finn Balor cost him the World Title.
The original Judgment Day has been fragmented with Priest and Ripley siding together to take down Dom, Morgan, Balor, Carlito, and JD McDonagh. WWE confirmed Priest and Ripley vs. Dominik and Morgan for Bash in Berlin.
Rey Mysterio affirmed his support for Priest and Ripley. However, he could take this further by helping the two babyfaces combat The Judgment Day. Mysterio lost to Dom-Dom on his last RAW appearances; so coming back with vengeance makes sense.
