CM Punk vs Dean Ambrose - A money making rivalry for WWE
Ever since the infamous pipe bomb promo in Las Vegas a couple of years ago, CM Punk has been one of the hottest acts on WWE TV. He is truly one of a kind and doesn’t fit into the cookie-cutter image of a true-blue ‘WWE Superstar’, whether it is in his actions, promos or work in the ring. While it’s tempting to call him unorthodox (a la John Cena, RVD), a real fan knows that isn’t the case at all. Unorthodox necessarily doesn’t mean interesting, which is what Punk is in spades and boy was he missed, during his absence from the ring after WM this year!
Punk is a rare talent and while he is really good, I feel a lot of his potential is yet untapped and WWE, like a ballet, is a tandem art and it takes a good opponent and a great feud to bring out the best in a talent like him. Sure, his runs against Cena and Jericho have been fantastic, but it’s been a while since I feel Punk has been truly tested against an opponent of similar mettle as him. Lesnar was an outstanding match, but it was just one match, and while the back and forth with Heyman is engaging, we all know that they are friends in real life and Paul is just a manager, so things are a bit limited.
But, what if there is someone who can really bring it to the straight-edge superstar and light up that intensity last seen in him during the MITB 2011 program? While there are many talented superstars on the WWE roster at present, the one resume that would be the best match for the job would be that of a certain Dean Ambrose.
As the resident lunatic of the highly exciting young faction, The Shield, Ambrose is the mainstay of the group and as the only one to hold an individual championship in the group, the company does seem to be going with the idea that started as an experiment with Punk. His in-ring work is terrific (check out his clips from the FCW days) and we have seen how fiery his promos have been every time a mic has been thrust into his hands as part of the Shield.
But how would he work his way into a feud with Punk, who is second only to Cena as the top draw in the company right now? Well, The Shield has been involved in the main-event scene more on than off since they debuted and off late in particular, their positioning on the card is regularly around the top slot. With the dissenting voices against Triple H getting thrown to the Shield for punishment, the scenario is clear.
Punk hasn’t really been the ‘Voice of the Voiceless’ in a while now, and while he broke into the big time as a martyr for the wrestling fans, he has since moved away from that ideology. Ambrose has even taken a shot at Punk, claiming to be the real ‘best in the world’ and what could start off as Punk standing up against the tyranny of the ruling regime, it can work its way into becoming co main-event program involving the 2 men who are ‘internet darlings’ from different times.
Punk has always been vocal about his desire to elevate upcoming talent and with rumors about his desire to take time off after his present contract runs out, he would be the best guy to slingshot Dean into a position of super-stardom. Dean, on his part, has a ready arsenal of pipe bombs of his own, where he could call out Punk for ‘going soft’ on his want for change as it wouldn’t benefit him anymore, like it did a couple of years back. A reality check for Punk could also open up avenues for a double turn and a showcase for both men to put their best foot forward.
As a fan of realistic wrestling story lines, this one feud has to be the one worth most salivating at…..
