It's time for Damien Sandow's first ever title reign in WWE

Damien Sandow

When Damien Sandow made his debut as the ‘Intellectual Saviour of the Masses’, he looked overconfident, arrogant and charismatic. He did not compete in his first few matches and depended heavily on the execution of his promos. And that turned out to be a great decision. Sandow has turned out to be, in my opinion, the best fictional character WWE has offered in recent times. His promos are filled with an arrogant attitude, sarcasm and quick quips against the ‘ignoramus’es. And now, after probably a year after his debut, a championship seems to be headed towards him sooner than later.

Sandow is arguably the best fictional character in a while for the WWE. At a time when non-fictional narratives have made their way into the WWE’s fictional narrative, what once seemed a novelty has now become a formula. In the midst of all that, Sandow’s character is reminiscent of characters from WWE’s golden era in the 80s.

When he talks, he does that effortlessly, with the right amount of drama and indifference towards the audience’s reaction, which seems irrelevant to him. (Remember when he drowned the ‘WHAT’ chants on SmackDown by saying “Thank you for your irrelevant opinion”?) His Q and A sessions with various audience members have also been quite entertaining. His actions are like a textbook heel, but he appears to be naturally good at it. He’s a “natural born” villain!

This past week Sandow faced RVD and lost. With Cody Rhodes fired, Sandow seems to be having no enemies. Even though Rhodes won at SummerSlam and no confrontations followed between the two afterwards, still Rhodes was the only one who had a gripe with The SmackDown MITB winner. With Rhodes gone, Sandow has no dancing partner and a loss on RAW does not seem to be helping either.

Unless, it was a test match for a Sandow and RVD feud.

As we know, Alberto Del Rio has been holding the World Heavyweight Championship since Payback, where he turned heel, and it seemed brilliant then, but as most of his momentums, this one too has lost its track. The championship feud between Del Rio and RVD has not been interesting thus far and Ricardo Rodriguez’s switch to RVD’s ring announcer is not at all convincing.

One scenario is that Rodriguez renews his alliance with Del Rio at Night of Champions by helping him win. The other scenario can be RVD winning the title and Sandow cashing in soon- at Night of Champions or soon after on any weekly show. RVD winning the title seems plausible, because most probably Daniel Bryan is not going to immediately win the WWE title. RVD is really popular and giving him a major title will only make fans happy. And the second scenario works for Sandow. He can’t face Del Rio as both are heels, and Sandow’s sharp promo ability should be best utilized on a face.

Sandow wearing the title seems like an exciting prospect given that he has not won a single championship since his debut, and how great is that for a young star to have his first title as the World title? He sure will look sharp with it, be it in a suit or a robe. Sandow sure looks like a champion and about time that he becomes one. ‘You’re Welcome!’
