Damien Sandow: Will his heel character see a premature end?
Damien Sandow is a great character as far as WWE’s fictional set up is concerned. He can work a promo and can definitely have a good match. He’s shown constantly why he is perfect for WWE’s future. And the WWE management knows that and that’s why he holds the Money in the Bank briefcase.
But the latest edition of Smackdown showed a different side of Sandow. He was not his snobbish self and he looked quite determined in asking for a fight. Now, how many heels have done that?
Apart from being complex and interesting, most heels usually show many traces of cowardice. Sandow’s performance on Smackdown is being touted as a company’s rehearsal outing for a face turn for the superstar. This speculation is slowly but steadily gathering storm.
Maybe that was WWE’s move to get the Universe talking about Sandow or maybe get his followers all riled up to go on every online portal and complain about this potential turn. Maybe it was just an attention grabbing move.
And this still leads to that one question -Is a Sandow face turn even required? The man seems to be doing a great job as a heel. He gets a reaction from the crowd and even though he has quite a following and some people do cheer him on in some arenas, it is still not convincing for him to turn face so suddenly.
And most probably Cena won’t return to lose a match (you never know, though). If Cena becomes the new champion, it only fits that the biggest baby face in the industry will face a heel. And if Sandow is allowed to cash in sooner than Ziggler did then Sandow is utilized best if he is a heel. But if Cena loses, Alberto del Rio will keep the title and then the speculations of a sandow face turn will again catch fire.
When Dolph Ziggler turned face, it was somewhat fitting because he was getting some of the loudest reactions in areana. He is great as a face. And unlike Miz and Del Rio he is not struggling with this turn. Sandow, on the other hand, has a lot of potential to get such loud reactions and his performance on Friday Night Smackdown showed that Damien Sandow can be one of the best superstars in the WWE as a heel or a face.
Even though it is interesting to see Sandow getting a face reaction from the majority of the arena, it is quite difficult to say what kind of characteristics he will endow for being a baby face. As a heel, he was very convincing. But most WWE baby faces are not interesting characters. Their gimmicks are rarely interesting.
The WWE creative can make or break a superstar. Sandow can be (or could have been?) a great character as the ‘Intellectual Saviour of the Masses’.
